FSU DE Tank Carradine out with torn ACL

Florida State defensive end Cornelius Carradine has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

FSU coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed the news during the ACC Championship teleconference on Sunday afternoon.

Carradine was injured during the fourth quarter of FSU's 37-26 loss to Florida on Saturday. Carradine, who entered fall camp as the No. 3 defensive end, has been stellar as a starter in place of All-ACC standout Brandon Jenkins. Jenkins suffered a foot injury in the season opener on Sept. 1.

"He was mature, he handled it very well," Fisher said. "Of course (he was) very sad because he wanted to finish the season with his teammate. It's a very sad moment but he understood and handled it very maturely."

Fisher said Carradine suffered the injury by making a cut. Like Jenkins' injury, it did not happen as the result of contact with an opposing player.

Carradine, a senior, leads FSU with 80 tackles and ranks second on the team in sacks (11) and tackles for loss (13) behind defensive end Bjoern Werner. Werner has 18 tackles for loss and 13 sacks this season, collecting 3.5 sacks in Saturday's loss.

Carradine's draft stock has catapulted with his exposure and production in 2012. He is rated as the No. 19 overall player by ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr..

Fisher believes the injury may only cost Carradine "a round at the most."

"For the draft, he'll be fine. He'll rehab and it won't affect those (NFL scouts) much at all," Fisher said. "(ACL injuries) aren't that big of a deal anymore."

An ACL injury takes 8-9 months to recover, which should have Carradine ready for NFL training camp this summer.

Freshman Mario Edwards Jr. and redshirt freshman Giorgio Newberry would be in line for starting snaps in Saturday's ACC Championship game against Georgia Tech in Charlotte, N.C. Fisher didn't specify which of the two players will step in as the starter for Carradine.

"We'll have to wait and see," he said.

Carradine joins Jenkins and running back Chris Thompson (torn ACL) as notable starters sidelined with season-ending injuries.

  • Fisher would not confirm the CBSSports.com report that Mark Stoops had interviewed with Kentucky about its head coaching vacancy.

  • Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said Sunday that the school has been notified that it will qualify for a bowl game even if it loses to Florida State in the ACC Championship on Saturday. Georgia Tech enters the championship game with a 6-6 record.
