Texas tight end commits to Florida State
Over the past three days, the 'Noles picked up four commitments for its 2014 class and on Saturday evening added one more, this time at the tight end position - Mavin Saunders of Kincaid (Houston, Texas).
"Yes, I committed to FSU," Saunders told Warchant.com. "(It's a) great education, it's close to home and I have the ability to play at the highest level."
Originally from the Bahamas, Saunders (6-5, 233) has only played one full year of football. He was a relative unknown prior to the Rivals Camp in Houston earlier this spring. But after a standout performance, the offers started rolling in. He holds over a dozen offers, including Nebraska, Oklahoma, Purdue, Texas Tech, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
The 'Noles were the first school to offer him a scholarship and his relationship with main recruiter Tim Brewster was one of the big reasons for his decision.
"Mavin felt that Tim Brewster and him had a connection. He felt that his relationship with Brewster sealed the deal," Kinkaid head coach Stephen Hill told Warchant.com. "He felt more comfortable and confident. He felt that he would be coached better by Brewster than any other coach."
Saunders is rated No. 14 tight end in the country by Rivals.com. Not bad for a kid who has been in America for just four years and knew nothing about the game. He was an accomplished basketball player and was even offered by UConn in his freshman year.
"He'd never even played football with his friends for fun growing up. He literally knew nothing about the game so we had to teach him everything," Hill told HuskerOnline.com last month. "He's been a student of the game ever since. He's actually fallen in love with it. He stays and works late with our quarterback catching passes and running stadium stairs."
Saunders is commitment No. 15 for Florida State's 2014 recruiting class and the first tight end.
