Advisory committee weighs in on FSU AD search
The next athletic director at Florida State will have to be a communicator, according to members of the school's advisory committee.
The committee, made up of school officials, trustees, local businesspeople and students, met for about an hour and a half Thursday afternoon to talk about what they wanted in the school's next athletic director.
"Someone who can communicate and be a great leader and go out and talk to people and be really industrious in that area," Trustee and committee member Andy Haggard said.
Haggard added that the next athletic director will need to take an active role in fundraising.
"(We don't want to) rely on the boosters, who do a fabulous job for us, but the athletic director is in a position of power," Haggard said. "If you go to different cities and ask who they'd like to talk to about the program, it's the athletic director. And we need him to go and sit down talk to people and explain what is going on in Florida State University."
The school has hired Turner Executive Search Associates to conduct the search, and Todd Turner was at Thursday's meeting to get feedback from the committee.
With former Athletic Director Randy Spetman's reassignment earlier this month and football season fast approaching, FSU president Eric Barron has said he'd like to have a new athletic director in place by the Fall.
Haggard said he was initially nervous about the quick turnaround, but after listening to Turner's presentation, he feels confident about the process going forward. The advisory committee didn't throw out any names at Thursday's meeting, but Haggard said the committee will review the candidates that Turner's firm provides.
"We're going to wait and see what Mr. turner comes up with," Haggard said. "We can talk to him over the phone and suggest names if we want. But it's basically going to be waiting for him to supply names."
