Hamilton signs contract extension, pay raise

Florida State men's basketball coach Leonard Hamilton signed on for a few more years and a hefty pay raise, the school announced Wednesday.

Hamilton's new contract runs through the 2016-2017 season. He will make $2.1 million in guaranteed compensation for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons as well as $2.25 million in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. In addition, if Florida State wins the ACC tournament, Hamilton's base salary increases by $125,000.

"Coach Hamilton has led this program to unprecedented success including the first ACC Championship in school history and eight postseason appearances," FSU president Eric Barron said.

Under Hamilton, the Seminoles are the third-winningest program in the ACC since 2005-2006, including a conference title in 2012. The 2013 season ended four straight years of NCAA tournament berths, a program record for FSU.

The contract extension comes just two days after the ACC officially welcomed Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame into the league. Defending men's basketball national champion Louisville will also join the conference in 2014. Florida State also just missed out on signing highly touted recruit Andrew Wiggins this summer, who spurned the Seminoles for Kansas.

"I am extremely thankful to president Eric Barron and our administration for allowing us to continue to build upon the foundation that we have worked so hard to put into place in my first 11 years at Florida State," Hamilton said in a statement released by the school. "We are excited for our university and our basketball program as we enter a new era in the Atlantic Coast Conference which is now the best league in the history of college basketball."

Hamilton has been the ACC's coach of the year twice, in 2009 and in 2012. He's currently the conference's second-longest tenured coach.

"Our goal is to become one of the elite programs in all of college basketball," said Hamilton. "With the continued support of the university and all of our tremendous fans, we are well on our way to achieving our goal."
