Vickers stays close to home, commits to FSU

Before this offseason, Florida State had not signed a Tallahassee football prospect since Clint Trickett in 2010. This summer, the Seminoles are making up for lost opportunities. It picked up its second local commitment today when North Florida Christian running back Jonathan Vickers decided it was time to end his recruitment.

First it was Godby linebacker Jacob Pugh, now Vickers has also decided that he will stay close to home. He made his pledge to FSU during n announcement at a local television station on Friday.

Hometown prospects are just one of the similarities Pugh and Vickers share. They also have high praise for their main recruiter, FSU defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. Like Pugh, Vickers says a huge part of his decision was Pruitt. The former Alabama assistant coach has been recruiting Vickers since Pruitt was at Alabama and Vickers was a freshman. The No. 30 ranked running back in the nation originally wanted to leave the area to go to college, but Pruitt convinced him to stay.

"I always said I said I wanted to leave Tallahassee and get out of here, but since I started talking to him and I've been going to visit, that really changed my mind and made me consider staying and being close to my family," Vickers told Warchant.com this spring.

The 6-foot, 205-pound back is also a solid baseball player and plans to play in college. He has kept a close eye on the early success a current football-baseball player on the roster, Jameis Winston. The redshirt freshman's success has helped Vickers realize that it is possible to successfully play both sports in college.

He rushed for 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore. He broke his leg the first game of his junior season but has made a full recovery.

Vickers selected Florida State over Georgia, Vanderbilt, Louisville and Ole Miss. He is No. 30 rated running back in the nation and ranked No. 60 overall in the state. He is commitment No. 19 for the 'Noles in the 2014 class.
