Fisher hinting he's close to naming starter after scrimmage

Florida State completed its final preseason scrimmage on Wednesday but there still isn't a starting quarterback, at least not officially.

Ever since Clint Trickett announced his intentions to transfer head coach Jimbo Fisher has maintained that it's a two-player race between Jameis Winston and Jacob Coker. That pronouncement hasn't prevented fans and media from anointing Winston as EJ Manuel's heir apparent.

Despite never taking a snap in a college game, the redshirt freshman signal-caller has already created a national buzz following his standout performance in last April's Spring Game. In fact, some including ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit, have touted him as a dark horse Heisman candidate.

Despite all the hype surrounding Winston Fisher has maintained his poker face throughout August practices. After Wednesday's scrimmage he continued to tout both quarterbacks.

"I was pleased with Jameis and Jacob today just standing from the sideline standpoint. I'm sure there are some things I'll see when I look at the film," said Fisher. "I thought both guys handled the huddle well, made plays, got the ball down field vertically, dumped it off and did some things handling the blitz."

With the season opener at Pittsburgh just 12 days away there isn't much time left to decide. With pre-game preparations beginning next week, FSU's head coach said the plan is to give the No. 1 quarterback slightly more reps with the first team offense when preparing for Pittsburgh.

Does that mean he's about ready to announce a starter?

"I won't put a timetable (on it) but it could happen (this week)," noted Fisher. "I'll wait and look at the film and talk to the staff again.

"I'm going to look and we'll make a decision. I know one thing, we've got two very good quarterbacks."

If a decision comes this week it could happen on Friday. Fisher will first address fans at the Kickoff Luncheon and later in the day will meet with the press following the afternoon practice.

Notable

  • Rashad Greene was held out of the scrimmage with his finger injury but Fisher said he expects him back either Saturday or Monday.

  • Backup offensive lineman Jacob Fahrenkrug had his left shoulder in a sling. Fisher said after the scrimmage that it was just "banged" and should be back at practice by the beginning of next week.

  • The top three tailbacks were dressed out in blue non-contact jerseys as a precaution but Fisher said they still were in contact, including blocking, but just weren't tackled to the ground.

  • Fisher still has not decided which assistant coaches will be in the box during games. "We'll have one more trial run on some things Saturday," said Fisher.

  • The Seminoles will not practice Thursday but will return to the practice fields at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 23 as they continue with fall camp.

  • The Kickoff Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 23 at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program to follow at 12 noon. FSU President Dr. Eric J. Barron, new Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox and Seminoles football coach Jimbo Fisher will address the fans, who will also be introduced to the 2013 Seminoles by the Voice of the Seminoles, Gene Deckerhoff.
