Woodside Steps in to Lead Toledo Past EWU

Toledo senior quarterback was carted off in the first half with an apparent knee injury, but true freshman QB Logan Woodside took over and led the Rockets to a 33-21 victory over a talented Eastern Washington football team that came into the game averaging 46 points per game and 611 yards of total offense.

Woodside was 14 of 24 passing for 185 yards and one touchdown on a 81 yard strike to senior receiver Bernard Reedy. Reedy finished the game with 5 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 15 yards on three carries. Senior running back David Fluellen paced the ground attack with 21 rushes for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaging 6.8 yards per rush. Junior running back Cassius McDowell carried the ball 10 times for 89 yards for the Rockets. Redshirt freshman Damion Jones-Moore rushed for 29 yards on 6 carries and true freshman Kareem Hunt gained 27 yards on 5 rushes.

As a team Toledo rushed for 325 yards and passed for 205 yards, for a total of 530 yards of offense.

The Rocket defense played solid all night, holding the potent Eastern Washington offense to just 21 points and 377 total yards while forcing two turnovers. Eastern Washington's ground game was non-existent, gaining just 51 yards on 22 attempts. EWU's star quarterback was pressured often tonight, and it affected his throws. He was just 21 of 41 passing for 326 yards. He threw three touchdowns, but also threw one interception.

Toledo linebacker Junior Sylvestre intercepted Adams, and safety Ross Madison recovered a fumble. Sylvestre and fellow linebacker Trent Voss led the defense with 7 tackles each. Freshman defensive tackle Treyvon Hester recorded another sack tonight. Toledo had two sacks in the game, with defensive end Jayrone Elliott recording the other sack.

Toledo improved to 1-2 on the season after two hard fought road losses to SEC opponents to start the season. Next up the Rockets will open conference play at Central Michigan.
