Official CaliFlorida update thread

The game is back in California this year after last year's game was played at the historic Orange Bowl in Miami, the first time in the game's history that it was played in the Sunshine State. The first five games of the series were all played in Southern California, at various locations from the Rose Bowl to UC Santa Barbara.

As is always the case involving these two states, the talent on hand will be very impressive, and you can expect several of these athletes to be tomorrow's stars at the college level and beyond. A look at some of the alumni who played in the game includes multiple NFL first round draft picks and college All-Americans.

Former Miami Hurricane standouts Sean Taylor (Washington Redskins), Vince Wilfork (New England Patriots) and D.J. Williams (Denver Broncos) all played in a CaliFlorida Bowl, as did USC All-American and first round pick Kenechi Udeze.

If you watch much college football at all on the weekends, you're sure to see several college standouts who played in the CaliFlorida Bowl, too. USC quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart played in the game, as did his All-American teammate, safety Darnell Bing. UCLA tight end Marcedes Lewis (2002), Bruins running back Maurice Drew (2003), Florida State linebacker Ernie Sims (2003) and Miami all-purpose player Devin Hester (2002) all had standout showings in the CaliFlorida game.

The game also has a history of close, competitive battles. Florida leads the series 4-2, but the total score of the series shows California with 127 points and Florida with 124, with three of Florida's four victories coming by three points or fewer.

"We've had some great moments in this game for sure," Air 7 Sports Director Steve Clarkson said. "My all-time favorite had to be in the 2000 game when one of the Florida players called out D.J. Williams during a joint dinner one night. D.J. was everyone's top player in the country that year and one of their players stood up and said he wanted to know who D.J was.

"Later that night, D.J. got on the phone and called 18 of the Florida players to tell them what a huge mistake that was. He then went out and dominated in the game."
