Matthews spends day at USC
Cliff Matthews is Rivals.com's No. 5 player in the Palmetto State this year and the No. 4 weak side defensive end in the nation. With an August decision planned, the 6-foot-4, 223-pound Matthews took what could be his final unofficial visit to USC.Cheraw (S.C.) four-star defensive end
"It was a good trip," Matthews said. "I got to see some things that I hadn't seen before, so it was good."
Matthews began the morning with a long visit with Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier.
"Coach Spurrier talked with us for a long time in his office. He talked about the championships he won at Florida and at Duke. Then he talked about winning what at USC and what he thought it would take to do it. One of the things he said he needed were some good defensive linemen."
Matthews then received a tour of several of South Carolina's facilities.
"We went to their academic building, the library and just walked around campus. Coach (David) Reaves is the one that showed us around. Quintin Richardson also walked around with us kind of being an extra recruiter for them."
Matthews then met with Gamecock defensive line coach Brad Lawing.
"We met with coach Lawing in his office. He showed me some film and went over some of the techniques they've been working on. I think he's a really good coach. It seems like he would be intense and get you to your maximum potential."
Matthews capped things off with a trip to the office of USC defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix
"Coach Nix talked to me about how bad they need defensive ends because they only had like three or four coming back next year. We went over their depth chart, and he broke it all down for me. We also watched some film. He seems like a good guy and a good coach. He knows what he's talking about."
Matthews will now turn his attention to choosing his college destination.
"I haven't set an exact date, but I'm going to decide sometime in August. The visit did help USC, but my order is still Georgia, Clemson and then USC as of today."
