Seminoles pitch shutout - FSU 33, UVA 0

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- With a new starting quarterback in the lineup, Seminole fans were hoping for some early fireworks. They got their wish just not from where they expected.

On the third play of the game, Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell threw what should have been a simple crossing pattern but FSU cornerback Tony Carter jumped the route, stepped in front of the pass and returned it 35 yards for an early Seminole touchdown.

"It was really a smart play by Tony," defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said. "He read the route, anticipated and broke on it. That was a huge play for us."

That was just the start of a dominating defensive performance that saw the 'Noles limit the Cavaliers to 183 total yards and more importantly marked FSU's first shutout since 2003.

"It lifts your morale, it makes you know what you are capable of and it gets you out of gassers on Monday," safety Myron Rolle said. "It's a great feeling because I think that last one was against Notre Dame in 2003, that's a while back. I know coach Andrews is happy about the performance and we all are."

Two series after Carter's pick and score, Virginia was stopped deep in their own end following a Lawrence Timmons' sack. Once again, fireworks sounded loudly for the Garnet and Gold.

This time it was the much maligned special teams that made a big play that resulted in the next FSU score. Walk-on defensive end Elijah Charles broke through the middle of the line and blocked the Virginia punt. After the ball bounced around for a while, and the Cavs were flagged with illegal batting, the 'Noles had a first and goal from the 1-yard line. On the next play, senior running back Lorenzo Booker went skyward over the line for FSU's second score to increase the lead to 14-0.

While the defense and special teams were having their way with the visiting Cavs, the Seminole offense and Xavier Lee were struggling. Other than the 1-yard touchdown run, the offense went 3-and-out on the other three drives of the opening quarter. Lee finished the first quarter 1-for-6 for four yards.

"You put Xavier in games the last two years and he's done okay but sometimes he doesn't do good," head coach Bobby Bowden said. "In the Duke game he had three interceptions in a quarter so then you start him against Maryland and he looks like a million dollars, looked like it was his 20th straight start. So now you have another game that he's going to start now which is he going to do -- Jekyll and Hyde."

FSU managed a 44-yard Gary Cismesia field goal just before the half to put the home team up 17-0 heading into the locker room but had accumulated only 93 yards of total offense.

It was all Jekyll in the second half as Lee drove the offense into the endzone twice in a little over a quarter of play to increase the 'Noles lead to a commanding 33-0.

The first touchdown came on a 37-yard strike to Chris Davis, his second touchdown in two games and fourth of the season. Two series later, the sophomore quarterback from Daytona Beach (Fla.) directed a 6-play, 74-yard drive that was capped off by a 2-yard Antone Smith touchdown.

With nearly a full quarter left to play, Drew Weatherford, who started 20 straight prior to last week's Maryland game, came on in relief. Even though he was able to drive the offense to UVA's 5-yard line late in the game, a fourth down pass to tight end Brandon Warren in the endzone fell short.

With Lee's sluggish start and Weatherford's fourth quarter appearance, the quarterback situation may still not be totally resolved. Bowden hinted that Lee will probably be the starter next week versus Wake Forest but still left the door slightly ajar for Weatherford.

"I couldn't say if Xavier will start next week," Bowden said. "I'm going to by time on that one. I'm not sure what we will do. It kind of looks like it, but I got to look at everything first."

Lee finished the game completing 12-of-25 for 185 yards and one touchdown. Weatherford completed 2-of-6 for 41 yards. Defensively, four players finished with nine tackles -- Michael Ray Garvin, Buster Davis, Myron Rolle and Lawrence Timmons. Led by freshman defensive end Kevin McNeil and his two sacks, the Seminole defense racked up a season-high six sacks.

The time and television information for next Saturday's FSU-Wake Forest game will be announced on Sunday.
