Seminoles blank the Hoosiers

The #2 ranked Florida State Seminole baseball team beat the Indiana Hoosiers 6-0 in Friday's series opener for their second shutout of the season. Bryan Henry dominated the IU batters with a strong eight inning performance while Travis Burge finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning. Henry scattered six hits through his eight innings, striking out seven and did not issue a walk in the game.

Second baseman Tony Thomas Jr extended his hitting streak to eighteen games with a couple of singles, while shortstop Mark Hallberg had two base hits and drove in two runs. Center fielder D'Vontrey Richardson had three in the game, but did commit the Seminoles' lone error.

Thomas led off the first inning with a single up the middle, went to second on a passed ball, to third on a Hallberg bunt single, and scored on a fielder's choice to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

Florida State doubled their run total in the third inning when Thomas singled again, stole second, went ot third on an error when the throw from the catcher went into center field, and scored on a Hallberg ground out.

FSU's third run came in the next frame when third baseman Jason Stidham hit his third home run of the season which went over the screen in right.

Hallberg led off the sixth inning with an infield single, went to second on an error, to third on a ground out, and scored FSU's fourth run on a single to right by right fielder Jack Rye.

Two innings later, designated hitter Ruairi O'Connor led off with an infield single, went to third on another infield single by Richardson, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hallberg.

The final run of the game came in the eighth inning when Stidham drew a two-out walk and eventually scored on Richardson's single third single of the game through the right side of the infield.

The Seminoles improved to 18-0 on the season while the Hoosiers fell to 4-5. Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:00 on Saturday with Michael Hyde (5-0, 2.17 ERA) on the mound for FSU against Matt Bashore (1-0, 1.93 ERA) for Indiana.
