Big East Week 5 Recap
Ben Mauk threw four TD passes in the second quarter as the Bearcats hammered host San Diego State 52-23. Cincy scored on six of its first seven possessions. The Bearcats are 5-0 for the first time since 1954. They've won eight in a row overall. Cincy has outscored its foes 232-53 this season.
Next: Saturday, at Rutgers.
TB Andre Dixon ran for 116 yards and a TD, and Tyler Lorenzen threw two touchdown passes as the Huskies improved to 5-0 by thrashing Akron 44-10. Akron led 10-9 late in the first half before UConn took control. The Huskies scored three third-quarter touchdowns, on drives of 60, 71, and 90 yards.
Next: Oct. 13, at Virginia.
The Cardinals' defense, which had been torched repeatedly in the first four games, forced five turnovers in a 29-10 victory at NC State. Louisville ran for 247 yards, with Brock Bolen's 112 leading the way. Art Carmody added three field goals and kicked the NCAA-record 227th extra point of his career.
Next: Friday, vs. Utah.
The Panthers fell behind 27-0 in the first quarter en route to a 44-14 loss at Virginia. Pitt tried an onside kick to start the game but touched the ball early, giving the Cavaliers possession at the Panthers' 39. UVa. scored four plays later and the rout was on. True freshman LeSean McCoy ran for a score and true freshman QB Pat Bostick threw a TD pass.
Next: Oct. 10, vs. Navy.
Mike Teel threw two TD passes and Ray Rice ran for a score, but it wasn't enough as the Scarlet Knights fell 34-24 to visiting Maryland. Rutgers rallied from a 14-3 first-half deficit to take a 17-14 halftime lead, but the Terps controlled the line of scrimmage in the second half.
Next: Saturday, vs. Cincinnati.
The Orange's 14-game winning streak against MAC schools came to an end with a 17-14 loss at Miami University. Andrew Robinson threw two second-half TD passes for Syracuse, a 43-yarder to Mike Williams and a 28-yarder to Taj Smith.
Next: Saturday, vs. West Virginia.
South Florida
The Bulls forced six turnovers in upsetting West Virginia 21-13. LB Ben Moffitt had two interceptions and returned one for a touchdown. WVU came in averaging 357 rushing yards, but the Bulls held them to 188. QB Matt Grothe tossed a 55-yard TD pass to Carlton Mitchell. A record USF crowd of 67,018 attended the game.
Next: Saturday, at Florida Atlantic.
West Virginia
The Mountaineers committed six turnovers in falling 21-13 at USF. WVU's running game was stymied, for the most part, and QB Pat White had to leave the game late in the second quarter with a knee injury. TB Steve Slaton was held to 54 yards and fumbled twice.
