MetroHawks squeaks New Heights 2010

A free throw with two seconds left in the fourth quarter from Aaron Brown allowed the Metro Hawks-A to top a young but talented New Heights 2010 on Thursday evening in a iS8/Nike Spring H.S. Classic regular season match up by a score of 66-65.

New Heights started out strong in the first quarter thanks to the play of their talented frontcourt. A dunk by former-Molloy forward Ashton Pankey at the first quarter buzzer gave New Heights a 20-18 lead.

However, while New Heights used their young frontcourt of Pankey and Bishop Loughlin's Jayvaughn Pinkston, the MetroHawks used their backcourt to produce much of their scoring. Guards Aaron Brown and Deshaun Wiggins caught fire for coach Jay Rodriguez's squad to help give them a 41-34 half time lead. Brown, out of New Jersey, led the MetroHawks with 19 points, while St. Anthony's Pankey led New Heights with 14 first half points, and the forward Pinkston chipped in with 10 points.

New Heights was able to stay in the game thanks to the strong transition game of their forwards. Pinkston connected on back-to-back transition lay ups to cut the Metro Hawks lead to 1. However, the sophomore Wiggins wouldn't let New Heights complete any kind of comeback, as a lay up for the 6'2" guard increased his team's lead to 52-47. A turn around jump shot for New Heights' Pinkston at the third quarter buzzer cut his team's deficit back to 1, at 52-51.

New Heights started the final quarter on a strong note, gaining a 58-54 lead thanks to the strong play of their frontcourt. However, the MetroHawks answered back with a 9-0 run to regain control of the game. However, New Heights wouldn't go away, as Jayvaughn Pinkston would go to the free throw line down 65-64 with just over 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter. After knocking down 1 of his 2 free throws, Aaron Brown raced down-court and attacked the basket hard and drew a foul himself. Brown went to the line and knocked down the game winning free throw, to give the MetroHawks a 66-65 victory.

Aaron Brown led the victorious MetroHawks with 23 points, while DeShaun Wiggins contributed with 18. Jayvaughn Pinkston led New Heights with 25 points in the loss.
