Florida State's Recruiting Class of 1985

Class of 1985

The 1985 class started the Seminole football tradition. Several players from this class went on to make major contributions both at FSU and in the NFL.

Mark Barron, OL, 6-2, 255, Atlanta, Ga. (North Springs) - has good speed for an offensive lineman (4.9 40) . - . played for an 8-2 North Springs High School program last season ... his team averaged 50 running plays per game and 75 percent of those were behind his blocks ... will play in Georgia North-South allstar game in July ... honorable mention all-state....

John Brown, DL, 6-3, 285, Deland, Fla. (Deland) - honorable mention Class AAAA . . . did not play football as a junior ... can play defensive tackle or noseguard ... took third place at state weightlifting championships as both a junior and senior ... also performed for his high school's wrestling team where he was third as a junior and state runnerup in the unlimited category as a senior . . . he went undefeated as a senior until the state championship match where he lost on points (10-5) . . . went 2-0 against fellow FSU recruit Kenneth Carr of Apopka ... a very experienced car mechanic....

Kenneth Carr, OL, 6-3, 260, Apopka, Fla. (Apopka) - earned third team Class AAAA all-state honors although one recruiting specialist listed him as the sixth best offensive guard in the South ... Bally 3rd team All-American . . . came to FSU with teammates Sammie Smith and Anthony Williams ... a high school coach, Jay Perkins, is now a graduate assistant at Florida State ... a top ten wrestler in the state in the super heavy weight division ... lost twice to fellow FSU recruit John Brown of Deland during his senior season....

Keith Carter, LB, 6-3, 228, Miami, Fla. (South Miami) - one of three All-Americans signed by FSU . . . named to the Parade All-American team as well as the USA-Today All-American team ... also picked to the first team all-state in Class AAAA list and the Orlando Sentinel Super Senior 24 list ... Football Weekly tabloid also had him listed as one of its top 100 high school seniors in the country ... has super all-around athletic ability and scored 44 points in a basketball game as a junior ... he also runs the 40 in 4.8 ... chose Florida State over Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Ohio State and Ole Miss ... is out of same high school as FSU junior linebacker Fred Jones ... brother plays at Tennessee State....

Ed Clark, LB, 6-3, 205, Miami, Fla. (American) - honorable mention all-county at American High School ... newcomer to football after making his mark in track his junior year ... is considered one of the state's top ten hurdlers according to the Orlando Sentinel ... has run the intermediates in 38.7 ... one of three Florida State signees from Miami....

Scott DiMare, WR, 6-0, 175, Miami, Fla. (Columbus) - a Class AAAA all-state performer from Miami Columbus High School ... caught 38 passes for 676 yards and seven touchdowns his senior year ... DiMare prefers wide receiver but he may also be a candidate for the defensive secondary before his career at FSU is over ... rated as one of the top 10 receivers in the South by one recruiting analyst....

Dedrick (Allen) Dodge, WR/DB, 6-2, 170, Mulberry, Fla. (Mulberry) - first team all-state in Class AA as a receiver his senior year . . . had 52 receptions for 617 yards ... at defensive back made 12 interceptions ... also a standout baseball and basketball player at Mulberry High School . . . he was the baseball team's MVP as a junior . . . a native of New Jersey, Dodge changed his name after he was legally adopted by Richmond and Ann Dodge....

Reno Fells, FB, 6-1,194, Palatka, Fla. (Palatka) - missed two games his senior year, but still picked up 914 yards on 126 carries for a 7.3 average playing out of the wishbone ... also scored seven touchdowns ... picked to the first team Class AAA allstate squad . . . ran a 9.7 100-yard dash as a junior and bettered that to 9.6 in early season track meets his senior season ... broke John L. Williams' (Univ. of Florida) single game rushing record at Palatka High when his 217 yards eclipsed Williams' 215 total . . . plans to major in criminology at FSU. . . .

Chip Ferguson, QB, 6-2, 1%, Spartanburg, S.C. (Spartanburg) - played in South Carolina-North Carolina Shrine Bowl and threw five passes for 125 yards and a TD ... set school single season passing records for touchdowns (21) and total offensive yards (2,557), breaking Steve Fuller's (Clemson and Chicago Bears) marks . . . also ran for 10 TDs . passed for 1,400 yards as junior . . .

Kevin Grant, LB, 6-3, 207, Ocala, Fla. (Forest) - played outside linebacker and fullback at Forest High School ... earned all-conference honors his senior year ... as a runner, gained 400 yards and scored six TDs ... started at defensive end as a sophomore and junior before making the switch to linebacker . . . an excellent athletic specimen, has room for growth as well as 4.6 speed in the 40 ... runs track and throws the shot (52-1) and discus and runs the hurdles as well (14.5) ... also a good student....

Odell Haggins, LB, 6-1, 210, Bartow, Fla. (Bartow) - chosen to the third team Class AAA all-state list ... played outside linebacker his sophomore and junior seasons before being moved inside . . . chose FSU over Auburn, Mississippi State, Florida and Miami....

Eric Hayes, DL, 6-3, 280, Tampa, Fla. (King) - Super Senior 24 member and an honorable mention all-USA pick ... United States Reserve Junior All-Star team . . . first team Class AAAA all-state noseguard from Tampa King High School ... will play in the Florida-Georgia all-star game this year ... cousin of FSU freshman linebacker Felton Hayes ... picked Florida State over Alabama....

Scott Johnston, QB/P/K, 5-11, 170, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Stranahan) - earned USA Today all-USA honors as a punter/ kicker ... also named to the Super Seniors 24 list and all-state first team . . . as a kicker, made 81 of 91 extra point attempts and 27 of 49 field goals over a four-year career ... longest kick was a 55-yarder ... averaged 44.9 yards a punt his senior season . . . started 22 games as a quarterback and threw for 3,090 yards over his last two seasons ... also accounted for 39 touchdowns ... completed 54 percent of his passes and had 28 interceptions ... second leading scorer in the country as a 9th grade field goal kicker...

Eric Krohn, DL, 6-3, 240, Paoli, Pa. (Conestoga) - played middle guard and tight end in high school ... led his team in sacks and tackles his senior year ... all-district and honorable mention all-state at Conestoga High School ... attended FSU football camp where he came to like the FSU campus ... runs a 4.7 40 yard dash....

Bryan Law, OL, 6-2, 246, Lake Wales, Fla. (Lake Wales) - comes from same high school as former Seminoles John and Scott McLean . . . played several positions his senior year, including defensive tackle, offensive guard and center ... president of the student body at Lake Wales High ... wants to major in political science and pre-law....

Chris Lundahl, QB, 6-3, 191, Provo, Utah (Timpview) - recommended by Brigham Young coach LaVell Edwards ... led his Timpview High School team to an 8-3 record his senior year ... threw for 2,224 yards and 24 touchdowns ... also played baseball and ran track for Timpview ... one of 12 children in his family . . . his brother Brigham was a running back at BYU while his father was a high school All-American . . . did not play high school football as a sophomore since his family had moved to California and he was ineligible ... although Lundahl is Mormon, it would not be mandatory that he do mission work that would interrupt his stay at FSU....

Chris Miller, DL, 6-2, 262, Tallahassee, Fla. (Leon) - earned first team Class AAA honors as a defensive lineman ... named to the Super Senior 24 and the All-South list that is picked by the Orlando Sentinel and covers 12 states ... was also the Big Bend area Defensive Player of the Year . . . played both sides of the line at Tallahassee Leon High School ... as a fullback, he averaged 4.9 yards on 102 carries . . . dropped out of school briefly at the end of his sophomore year to help his family and attended night school to catch up....

John Parks, DB, 6-4,193, Ormond Beach, Fla. (Seabreeze) - made the first team Class AAA all-state team as a free safety ... his name can also be found on the Super Senior 24 list ... made 66 tackles and four interceptions as a defensive back ... on offense Parks caught 17 balls for 374 yards and eight TDs . . . also plays basketball and was named to the Volusia County allstar team following his senior season as well as being chosen to the honorable mention all-state team ... also has participated in track and field and has high jumped 6-8 ... chose FSU over South Carolina....

Keith Ross, RB, 5-10, 175, Newberry, Fla. (Newberry) - originally signed by Florida in 1982 but never enrolled ... instead signed with the Phillies and played minor league baseball for two years ... AA first team all-state as a senior running back in 1981 when he rushed 231 times for 1,600 yards, a 6.9 average, and scored 16 TDs ... his career stats included 590 rushes for 4,990 yards and 39 touchdowns, 39 returns for 1,208 yards and five TDs, and five receptions for 166 yards and three TDs . . . that adds up to all-purpose yardage of 6,364 yards and 47 TDs . . . also played defensive back at Newberry ... state 100 and 220 champion and anchored the winning 440 yard relay as Newberry won the AA state track and field championship ... projected as a running back at FSU and will add depth to the tailback slot....

Deion Sanders, WR/DB, 6-1, 175, Ft. Myers, Fla. (North Ft. Myers) - played quarterback and defensive back his senior year of high school . . . ran for 133 yards one game and passed for 136 in another ... his season totals were 839 passing yards and 499 rushing ... picked off four interceptions as a defensive back ... limited by a knee injury late in the season ... recovered in time for basketball season, and was chosen to the Southwest Florida team as well as second team all-state while averaging 24 points per game ... may give some thought to playing baseball at FSU also. . . .

Sammie Smith, TB, 6-1,214, Apopka, Fla. (Apopka) - named to almost every all-star team in the country ... a Parade AllAmerican, USA-Today All-American, Bally's All-American, Super Senior 24 list in the state of Florida and a first team Class AAAA all-state choice . . . he was also named to Football Weekly's list of top 100 football players in the country ... gained 1,210 yards in 119 carries and scored 16 TDs while playing just 7.5 games his senior season ... rushed for 930 yards in just five games ... had two 200-yard first halves ... as a junior, rushed for 1,485 yards in 180 carries and scored 23 times ... also excells on the track where he won the Class AAAA state championship in the 100 (9.6) and 200 (21.3) his junior year . . . and finished third as a senior. . . .

Michael Tanks, LB, 6-3, 240, Decatur, Ga. (Southwest Dekalb) - will be one of 12 future Seminoles in the Florida-Georgia all-star game this summer . . . his high school coach William Godfrey will coach the wide receivers in that game ... played defensive end and tight end for his Southwest Dekalb High School team ... the team went undefeated in the regular season ... runs a 4.6 in the 40 yards ... took official visits to Wisconsin, Wake Forest, Eastern Kentucky, East Carolina and FSU....

Shelton Thompson, LB, 6-3, 200, Lakeland, Fla. (Lake Gibson) - third team AAA all-state selection as a senior at Lake Gibson High School ... also earned all-county recognition at both linebacker and offensive tackle ... holds the school record in the discus....

Pat Tornberlin, OL/DL, 6-4, 300, Middleburg, Fla. (Middleburg) - made 65 stops as a defensive tackle his senior year ... first team Class AAAA all-state performer and Super 24 Senior . . . biggest 1985 Florida State signee . . . considered to have good speed . . . also pitches for his high school's baseball team. . . .

Patrick White, WR, 6-2, 186, Tampa, Fla. (Hillsborough) - caught 47 passes for 743 yards and five touchdowns . . . led all AAAA receivers in yardage and was fifth in 3A and 4A receptions ... his high school wide receiver coach was Roger Overby, a former wide receiver at FSU . . . has also played some tight end . . . has just played a total of two years of football . . . chose FSU over Tennessee, Syracuse, Arizona State and Louisville ... a 3.5 student while taking college preparatory classes ....

Alphonso Williams, DB, 6-0, 187, Lloyd, Fla. (Jefferson County) - rates among the top 15 defensive backs in the state according to the Orlando Sentinel ... played cornerback and safety on defense and wide receiver on offense at Jefferson County High School ... a first team Class AA all-state selection ... averaged 13 solo tackles per game, 130 on the season in 1984 . . . best single game effort was a 17 solo tackle game . . . as a wide receiver, caught 20 passes and three touchdowns . . . AllBig Bend ... a B student....

Anthony Williams, DL, 6-3, 268, Apopka, Fla. (Apopka) - an All-South performer out of Apopka High ... a first team all-state selection in Class AAAA ... received the Orlando Touchdown Club's Defensive Player of the Year award ... named to Football Weekly's list of top 100 high school seniors in the nation . . . will be playing with and against future teammates at the FloridaGeorgia All-Star game this summer ... could get an early look in the Seminole fall workouts....

Peter Tom Willis, QB, 6-3, 180, Morris, Ala. (Mortimer Jordan) - the Class AAAA Player of the Year in Alabama ... an all-state and All-South selection as well ... threw for over 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns at Mortimer Jordan High School ... passed for nearly 400 yards in one game and five touchdowns in another as his school went 9-3 ... honorable mention all-state in basketball his senior season ....

Tony Yeomans, DL, 6-2, 285, Jesup, Ga. (Wayne County) - played noseguard at Wayne County High School ... had 46 solo tackles and 26 assists in 1984 ... also caused 24 fumbles ... was a four-year starter on the defensive line . . . will play in Florida-Georgia all-star game . . . has a 3.3 grade point average ... recruiting specialist Bill Buchalter calls him "the most unknown lineman in the South". . . .
