Keenum gets big win to go with big numbers
Following the lead of BYU quarterback Max Hall, Houston quarterback Case Keenum put his team in BCS-busting position by upsetting a team from Oklahoma to earn Rivals.com National Player of the Week honors.
Keenum was 32-of-46 for 366 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception, in a 45-35 upset of host Oklahoma State. Keenum, who was Rivals' Conference USA player of the week, also rushed for a score to account for four of the Cougars' five offensive touchdowns.
His best moment, though, might have been one of his few imperfect moments. On fourth-and-goal from Oklahoma State's 6, Keenum threw a pass into the end zone that was batted into the air by a Cowboys defender. Running back Bryce Beall came down with the catch for the go-ahead touchdown with 6:42 left in the game.
Keenum, who passed for 5,020 yards and 44 touchdowns in 2008, will have another shot to beef up Houston's BCS credentials in the Cougars' next game, a home contest against Texas Tech on Sept. 26.
NATIONAL COORDINATOR OF THE WEEK: Gus Malzahn continued his makeover of Auburn's offense as the Tigers rolled up 589 total yards in a 49-24 rout of Mississippi State. The Tigers rushed for 390 yards in the victory.
NATIONAL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK/BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michigan true freshman quarterback Tate Forcier helped turn the Wolverines' fortunes by going 23-of-33 for 240 yards and two touchdowns in a wild 38-34 win over Notre Dame. Forcier - a San Diego native who enrolled early and went through spring practice - also rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown.
