Warhawks talk FIU
ULM continued their winning streak in the state of Florida last week when they defeated Florida Atlantic. The game lived up to the hype of the growing rivalry series, as ULM won by a narrow 27-25 decision. No game has been decided by more than seven points, and no home team has won.
"I think it's always important to win a close game early on, it gives you something to build on and to draw on if in that situation again," Head Coach Charlie Weatherbie said of his team's win at FAU.
Now the other Florida team, FIU will enter Malone Stadium on Saturday for a homecoming contest televised on the new regional Sun Belt Network.
"FIU is bringing a good team in this year," junior qb Trey Revell said of this week's opponent. "One thing that really sticks out is that their defense flies around. That's an aggressive defense, and they play through the whistle. Tenacious is a word for them."
FIU ranks near the bottom of the NCAA rankings for total offense (110th) and total defense (118th), while ULM has enjoyed success on both sides of the ball, ranking 53rd in total offense and 79th in total defense.
Leading the Panther's defense is linebacker Scott Bryant. Bryant is fifth all-time in career tackles at FIU. Offensively receiver T.Y. Hilton is the biggest threat. Hilton is the leading receiver in the Sun Belt Conference, and ranks nationally with his kick returning skills.
The Warhawks match-up well against the Panthers and the series lead is held by ULM; however the lone win by FIU did occur in Malone Stadium in 2005. Despite this one time loss, the Panthers have lost their three games this season by an average of 15 points, while ULM is riding high off the momentum from reaching the .500 mark for the first time in their FBS history.
Kick off for the conference home opener is scheduled for 2:30. Check back with WarhawkReport.com for a full recap of the game's action and get your free seven day trial to WarhawkReport.com and the entire Rivals.com Network.
