The Florida State University Marching Chiefs

The Florida State Marching Chiefs!

The world-renowned Florida State University Marching Chiefs consist of 450 students from virtually all disciplines and majors available at FSU. The band started nearly 60 years ago at the then Florida State College for Women. With growth throughout the decades and the school's change to The Florida State University, a newspaper contest resulted in the band's name change to the "Marching Chiefs" in 1950. In 1953, then-Director Dr. Manley Whitcomb hired Charles Carter as the Chief's arranger. Over 40 years later, Dr. Carter is still arranging the spirited sounds of The Marching Chiefs.

The Marching Chiefs is the largest collegiate marching band in the world with membership comprised of students from virtually every academic department within the University.

They have gained national and international recognition as the band that never lost a half-time (Sports Illustrated) Past performances seen and heard by millions include all of the major college bowls. In 1974, they traveled to Syria on a State Department sponsored visit to perform at the International Trade Fair in Damascus. In 1997, the Chiefs traveled to London to provide half-time entertainment for the World Football League.

The Chiefs perform at all home and several selected away football games. They also appear at the annual post-season bowl game and are an integral part in the College of Music's remarkable Prism Concert series
