Pac-Tending 03-10-10


"We're thrilled to welcome Danette back to the Pac-10 where she got her start."

- Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott in announcing the hiring of new chief marketing officer Danette Leighton - who is an Arizona alum and previously worked with the conference.



The 2009-10 championship men's and women's hoop tournaments begin this week with Stanford holding the top seed for the women's tournament and California holding the top seed for the men's tournament. Conference awards for both the women and men were announced by the conference.

The Pac-10 hired a new chief marketing officer and senior associate commissioner and general counsel for the conference.


Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, former USC recruit Renardo Sidney has been ruled ineligible for 30% of the 2010-11 season.





USC

In men's hoop, head coach Kevin O'Neill fired assistant coaches Gib Arnold and Phil Johnson.



Arizona State

In football, receiver Brandon Smith received a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA.



Oregon State

In football, quarterback Lyle Moevao was denied an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA.



UCLA

In women's gymnastics, sophomore Eyse Hopfner-Hibbs was named as the conference's special performance of the week.



Arizona

In soccer, senior Analisa Marquez was invited in the pre-season camp of the Women's Professional Soccer [WPS] league's Boston Breakers.



Stanford

In women's gymnastics, senior Carly Janiga was named as the conference's gymnast of the week.



WSU

In swimming, senior Michaela Ahlin was invited to the NCAA championships.

In men's hoop, the Cougars were swept by Oregon State and Oregon to fall to 16-14 overall and 6-12 in conference play with a 156 RPI.

In women's hoop, the Cougars lost to Oregon State but defeated Oregon to move to 8-21 overall and 3-15 in conference play with a 168 RPI.

In baseball, Wazzu took three out of four from Utah to improve to 9-1 overall with an RPI of seven.

In tennis, 60th-ranked Wazzu upset Arizona to improve to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.



California

In softball, junior pitcher Valerie Arioto was named as the conference's pitcher of the week.



Washington

In football, sophomore running back Curtis Shaw will transfer.



Oregon

In men's hoop, head coach Ernie Kent has been fired by the university, according to local reports.
