SDSU Camp Notes Day 17
San Diego State wrapped up its fall camp on Friday afternoon, and as always, AztecSportsReport.com was there to bring you the scoop. Take a look at the Camp Notes from SDSU's final day:
Dingwell to get backup job ... for now
Adam Dingwell didn't exactly run away with the backup quarterback job, but head coach Rocky Long said he will likely be the backup QB to Ryan Lindley when the season starts next week against Cal Poly.
Long did say, however, the Aztecs will choose a backup quarterback on a week-to-week basis after next week.
"It will depend on how they practice that week," Long said.
Dingwell, a redshirt freshman, beat out sophomores Ryne Clark and Jake Bernards this camp for the job.
Long said the weekly competition will likely be between Dingwell and Bernards for the rest of the season.
No set receivers
The other big position battle heading into this camp was at the wide receiver spot. And apparently, that battle is still going on.
Long isn't sure how the depth chart at wideout will go this season, even though Colin Lockett and Dylan Denso have been running with the first team for the entire fall camp.
"I don't know how the rotation will go out there," the head coach said. "They're still trying to get better."
Long did praise true freshman Paul Pitts, however. He said the frosh from Rancho Cucamonga has done "the best" out of the young receivers and will most likely play this season.
"He's the one catching passes out there and I don't see the other ones catching passes," Long said of Pitts. "He's going to be on the travel squad, which probably means he's going to play."
After touching the ball nearly 300 times last season, Ronnie Hillman wants to be even more of a workhorse for SDSU this year.
Hillman said he has been "nagging" the coaching staff to let him take some kickoffs this season, and he said they have finally agreed to let him try it out.
"I did it in high school," Hillman said of kick returning. "It should be fun if they let me get back there. I hope they let me get back there."
Long still has not decided who his starting kick returners will be, although he acknowledged Hillman could be one of them. He said he's not afraid of the extra injury risk that comes with kickoff returns either, and neither is Hillman.
"Come game time," Long said, "you don't worry about getting people hurt."
Hillman will likely compete with Walter Kazee and Brandon Davis for the starting job.
Long said this morning's practice without the seniors, who were helping move the freshmen into their dorms, "was not lively or energetic whatsoever." He said the afternoon practice was much better. ... Overall, Long said this year's camp was good for SDSU. "I think most of the time they got better," he said. ... Long said linebacker Jake Fely (leg) practiced today and is fine. ... The Aztecs will not practice on Saturday and will officially start game week on Sunday.
