Warhawks fall to UALR

After a lopsided loss at UALR, the Warhawks were hoping for a better performance at home on Thursday night. 38.5% shooting and a quartet of air-ball free throw attempts though set the tone as ULM fell 70 - 60.

"The first half was a poor effort, and I don't know why," Head Coach Keith Richard said. "It baffled me as well. The second half, we played harder, with some energy; no pouting, and so we had a chance."

ULM (3-16, 2-11) found themselves in a back-and-forth first half battle before a late 8-0 Trojan run helped UALR (15-10, 9-5) take a 13 point lead into the intermission.

"It seemed like anytime something went wrong, we hung our heads and got down on ourselves; that's not a competitor," Richard said.

The Warhawks would battle back and compete in the second half though, as they were able to pull within three points with just over two minutes remaining thanks to a series of three pointers from Trey Lindsey. Lindsey led all scorers with 18 points - a new career high.

In the paint, the Warhawks leaned heavily on Jayon James, who finished with 15 points, but the height of Trojans Gus Leeper, Andrew Poulter, and Will Neighbour were too much for the 6'6" James. The big Trojans also limited Trent Mackey to just six shots; none connected.

"That's why we need more depth," Richard said. "Mackey looked like he was going to pass out, early in the game even. Trent needed to only play two or three minutes; but in rebuilding a program, you saw it tonight that we need more depth. Many of our guys were hugging their knees and bending over, out of breath. Arkansas-Little Rock, they have depth, and play eleven guys; running them in and out."

The Warhawks will not head south for the weekend to face off against in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday.
