Florida State picked up two receiver commitments for the 2014 class shortly after its July summer camp. One from Miami Northwestern, JoJo Robinson, in addition to Jacob McCrary of Coral Reef, Fla. Today the Seminoles struck gold again with another receiver from the South Florida area. C.J. Worton of South Dade (Homestead, Fla.) announced he has verbally committed to Florida State.
"I just talked to Coach Fisher and talked about how much they wanted me there. I had been at both of their camps in June and July, so I thought it was time to commit and be a part of the family," said Worton.
The 6-foot, 170-pound Worton participated mostly during FSU's June camp, liking the experience so much, he returned to briefly participate again in July. A short time later, Worton was offered FSU's staff.
What did the coaches like so much about Worton that they extended him an offer?
"Coach Dawsey liked how I have that sneaky ability to get open. They liked how at the last camp I was out there coaching and showing leadership with the other guys," he said. "They also liked how I knew the game of football and how I read, dissect plays."
While leadership and the ability out in space were certainly draws, route running might be Worton's biggest strength.
"I think the way I make defensive backs think I'm going one way but change directions is what I pride myself on in getting open all the time," Worton explained.
Prior to the summer camps, Worton was no stranger to Florida State. His brother J.J. Worton, who plays at Central Florida, camped at FSU while in high school. C.J. and the rest of the family tagged along to experience the program.
"I've been watching FSU since I was an eighth grader, so when I visited with my brother I got more familiar," he explained. "The last time I was here I got to talk a lot with Rodney Smith and we broke down the offense to me. Then I watched all the receivers' film."
The receiver also plans on taking in some FSU games this year, the first being the annual battle between FSU and Miami, which is being held near his hometown. Then later in the season, he hopes to attend the Florida game.
