Florida State's already thin linebacker corps has sustained another major blow. Two sources at FSU have confirmed to Warchant.com that former five-star linebacker Matthew Thomas has been declared ineligible for the 2015 season.
Being declared ineligible is the latest downturn in a tumultuous career for the highly touted South Florida prospect.
Thomas was suspended for the first half of the 2014 season and then saw several ups and downs when he finally hit the field as a redshirt freshman. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder finished last year with 26 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. He was ejected during the Nov. 22 game against Boston College for targeting, and suspended for the first half of the Nov. 29 game versus Florida.
A Florida State source indicated that the staff is still hopeful that the redshirt sophomore will be able to return to the team next spring. If that happens, the Miami native will have two years of eligibility remaining starting next fall.
Despite the loss of Thomas, FSU does have some options at linebacker. The Seminoles return starters Reggie Northrup and Terrance Smith and backups Ro'Derrick Hoskins and Tyrell Lyons. They also have freshman Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane, redshirt freshman Delvin Purifoy, and they hope to have junior college transfer Lorenzo Phillips.
Phillips still hasn't practiced with the team, but head coach Jimbo Fisher said he believes Phillips could be cleared by Wednesday. The team has been waiting for his junior college transcript to clear.
