Former Florida State great and long-time NBA standout Bob Sura had his No. 3 jersey retired and raised in the rafters at halftime of Saturday's FSU-NC State game. After being honored in front of an announced crowd of 7,685, the 'Noles' all-time scoring record leader spoke to the media about his memories at Florida State and in the NBA.
What was it like for you today being honored?

I kind of teared up a bit and this was the most nervous I've ever been on that floor so it was kind of weird. But it was one of the proudest moments of my career to be recognized as one of the all-time greats. It's something that's going to last forever so it's pretty special.
Earlier Coach Hugh Durham was honored, today it was you and probably Sam Cassell in the near future. What does that mean to you?
I think it's good for the program. Most of the big time programs have all their former players and the NBA guys involved. I think Leonard has done a good job of trying to get all us back incorporated with the program.
Did you ever imagine this when you first arrived in Tallahassee from Pennsylvania
No, I couldn't imagine playing here, breaking records and going to the NBA. All of it is kind of surreal for me.
After you got to FSU, when did you know you belonged as a player?
It took me a couple years. I would say not until my junior year. I just went at it full throttle, I didn't even realize myself how good I was until my junior year when people started talking about the NBA. That's when I realized I was one of the better players. I really just put it all out there and didn't realize how good I was until looking back now.
Despite being a guard you were an outstanding rebounder both at FSU and in the NBA. How did you pull that off?
I've always been a great rebounder especially for a guard. I was probably one of the best rebounding guards probably ever in the ACC as well. It's just something I like to do. It's a toughness thing to go in there and get after the ball with the big guys.
You are a frequent visitor to FSU a lot and have been to some football games as well. What is it about Tallahassee that keeps bringing you back?
I love it here and this is the place that has opened all the doors for me. I recently bought a car dealership in town so I've been spending quite a bit of time here. I enjoy it because I have a lot of good friends and a lot of good people.
A lot of people doubted you but to have your career go like this are you tempted to brag about it?
You never want to brag while you are still playing. Now that I'm kind of retired I can (say), 'yea I did that'. Again, the Hall of Fame, the jersey retirement, the things that are be here forever is really just unbelievable and is something that is going to have lasting impression forever is pretty amazing and surprising to me as well.
You've had a chance to watch FSU some and they have a player in Al Thornton that will be playing in the NBA next year. What is your impression of him?
He reminds me of myself a lot watching him. He looks like a tough kid, he's in there getting after every rebound, and I'm impressed by his play -- this is the first time I've seen him in person. I wish I had that size and athletic ability when I was here.
You said coach Hamilton has helped bring you and others back here. What did he say to you?
Again, you see all the major programs involve their former guys and I think coach has been the driving force behind getting these jerseys retired and bringing some of the NBA guys back. It builds tradition and I think the program is going to be headed in the right direction. I think it's a good thing that he's doing.
Do you expect to see Sam Cassell's jersey up there soon?
Hopefully, it's not right next to mine (laugh). No, Sam is a phenomenal player and he certainly deserves it even though he was only here for two years. But he was an amazing player here and obviously had a great NBA career as well.
Do you think this team still has a shot to make it to the NCAA Tournament?
It would be interesting to see. Anything can happen in the ACC Tournament so if they play well for a few games and have a strong finish, certainly.
The fact that this program hasn't really been able to repeat what was done during when you were at FSU make you appreciate the success you had even more?
It's very difficult coming into the league being known as a football school, competing for recruits against Duke and North Carolina. That makes what we did here pretty special, to be able to come in and make an impact we did in our first two years. But it's a tough road competing against the other schools in this league.
Are you totally retired from the NBA yet?
I'm not officially retired. I'm still under contract with the rockets but for all intents and purposes this will be my last year. The main thing is the arthritis and disc problems in my back, and I also have an arthritic right knee. I think my style of play had something to do with that, just putting it all out there, so I'm paying for it. But I have no regrets in my 12-year NBA career or here at all. Even though the injuries have cut it kind of short.
