Former Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden made national headlines earlier this week when he reportedly called Jameis Winston "an embarrassment to the university" while being interviewed by national radio host Paul Finebaum.
The quote from Bowden sent out on Finebaum's Twitter account, and the one that made most of the national headlines, was a bit selective and cut out part of his actual comment but the damage was done. Sports talk shows, internet message boards and social media have been all a buzz since Tuesday afternoon discussing the incendiary remark.
"I think it's a consensus among FSU fans and boosters that he was an embarrassment to the University" - Bobby Bowden on Jameis Winston- Paul Finebaum (@finebaum) May 12, 2015
In an interview with Warchant.com on Wednesday night, Bowden explained what he intended to say during Finebaum's show but didn't completely back off from his Tuesday afternoon comments.
"I said sometimes he was an embarrassment," explained Bowden. "There's a difference between saying 'sometimes' a guy was an embarrassment instead of 'an' embarrassment. There were times when he did things, well let's just say they would have embarrassed me."
Bowden did actually use the word "an" in the comment in question, but also added "in a lot of ways" which was the part of the quote left out of Finebaum's tweet.
"Don't confuse what I said with what he (Finebaum) said afterwards," noted Bowden. "From what he said afterwards you'd think Bowden thinks this but that was him talking."
The 85-year old coaching legend freely admitted that he had a lot of players that embarrassed him during his five and a half decades of coaching and what happened during Winston's career was nothing unusual.
"I said the same thing but of course they weren't interested in printing that," he said. "I had boys that got in trouble and any time they did I always worried that they'd make our boosters and alumni upset and ashamed... It comes with the territory but don't tell me when that happens you don't get embarrassed."
