Catching up with the FSU commits: WR Joshua Burrell

With the NCAA's early signing period looming on Dec. 16, Warchant is catching up with several of the Seminoles' committed prospects to see how locked in they are with FSU and how things have gone during their senior seasons.

First up in this series is South Carolina wide receiver Joshua Burrell, who has been committed to FSU since May and has been active when it comes to recruiting other prospects. Burrell discusses his plans to sign with Florida State in December, why he's never wavered in his commitment and more.

The receiver also said his current height and weight are 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds.

On sticking with his FSU commitment

"When I committed, I really meant it. When I took the process in, I evaluated everything. So it wasn't just football but everything for me with Florida State -- as a student-athlete and a place I knew I could see myself at. I looked at the offensive playbook and fit. When I did it, I was 100 percent committed, so that's why I wasn't concerned with the struggles (this season).

"I think I can help the depth in that receiver room and work my way up and earn my spot and playing time. With our class ... we are bought into the vision and where we are going to be and not where we are now."

On embracing Mike Norvell's vision

"I think we need to have a championship mindset. Whether that's in the books or how we represent Florida State. You need that mindset all the time in everything you do. All bought into one thing. Can't have guys thinking about different things, and once we have that, we will be in the right spot."

Reflecting on his senior season

"I always tell everyone, I was just happy to have a chance for a season and to be there with my guys and do whatever I could to make an impact on the year. Didn't go the way we wanted to (Blythewood finished 3-3). We had a QB come in from North Carolina, and that was two days before we started in our first scrimmage. I had some big plays during the season, but it wasn't my most exciting year. What I took from the season was I didn't need the stats to take away from my teammates. I get more excited about my guys having a chance to play in college and have opportunities."

His final game at Blythewood

"It meant a lot. Our last game was against Gaffney, one of the best teams in our state, and we only lost by six (24-18). It shows what we are capable of if we put everything together. But for me, it meant everything playing with our guys that put so much into it."

On the focus of FSU's 2021 class

"We talk a lot in the group chat. From the very start, it's been about bringing back the national championship narrative to Florida State, and that's what we all are locked in with. I know several guys are going to enroll early. Even with the struggles, we have stuck together and have the same goals and get to work. I talk with Koby Gross the most out of the commits, but we all as a group talk a lot.

"I think so many guys signing early shows they are all bought in and they really want to change the narrative of Florida State Football and be the difference-makers in this class. Just get things on the right path and be a part of something special."

Preferred jersey number?

"I would like No. 9, but I know Lawrance Toafili has that one. So maybe 1, 4 or 11."

On playing other sports, activities in his youth

"I started playing soccer and basketball first, and that was when I was 8 or 9. Then I really started to get into football, and once I had an offseason workout with weights and training, I knew that's where I wanted to be and loved it.

"I also really enjoyed arts stuff. I like to draw cartoon stuff and see stuff on YouTube that I would just recreate the image."

Other hobbies and interests

"I love playing video games when I have a chance, and I play Coach Dillingham (FSU offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham) often in Madden, which I'm pretty good at and I've beaten him several times. But mostly, I really enjoy being around my family. Some with my friends as well, so I can escape from everyday life stuff.

"My family has impacted me in so many ways. My parents have been great role models, and they have kept me humble throughout everything."
