Florida State cornerback Greg Reid has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules. FSU coach Jimbo Fisher released a statement on Wednesday morning announcing the dismissal.
Reid, who had 32 tackles and two interceptions last season, was slated to be one of Florida State's starting cornerbacks and was on pace to break the school's punt return yardage record held by Deion Sanders. Reid tallied seven interceptions in his FSU career.
Reid had his share of off-field issues in his time at Florida State. He was suspended for a game for a violation of team rules in 2011. He was also arrested on charges of perjury in an unofficial proceeding and resisting arrest during another incident involving a friend using Reid's scooter last fall. The charges were dropped in that case.
The latest public news involving Reid off the field came when was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol following a traffic stop in his hometown of Valdosta, Ga. on July 10 and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license and a seatbelt violation. An additional team rules violation since the arrest could have been Fisher's grounds for dismissal.
This past spring, Reid said that maturity was a goal for him on and off the field.
"Just being mature," Reid said of his goal for the spring in March. "Just going out and trying to know everything I have to do and just kind of make it just a habit. That's the main thing, just being mature and just whatever I've learned the last couple of years just try to make everything become a habit."
Reid was scheduled to be arraigned on the three misdemeanor charges in the Georgia State Court of Lowndes County on Sept. 5.
"We're still evaluating that whole process and where it goes," Fisher said during the ACC Kickoff in Greensboro, N.C. last week.
Florida State could turn to Tyler Hunter or Nick Waisome to fill in at Reid's cornerback spot.
