Commitment analysis: Four-star ATH Ja'Khi Douglas picks Florida State

THE SITUATION

Ja'Khi Douglas recently wrapped up another nationwide tour, one that included pit stops at Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Mississippi State and LSU. After returning back to Louisiana, the four-star athlete's mind had been made up.

Douglas committed to Florida State on Independence Day. LSU and Florida finished second behind the Seminoles for the talented Louisiana prospect.

HOW IT HAPPENED

There were many peaks and valleys for Douglas throughout his recruitment.

Initially, Douglas was high on Alabama after camping in Tuscaloosa and impressing the entire Crimson Tide coaching staff. Soon after landing an offer from the Tide, Douglas camped for Coach Ed Orgeron and earned an offer from the hometown SEC school -- LSU -- which jumped out in front for the four-star athlete.

Multiple offers eventually rolled in for Douglas, including Florida. Douglas made a string of visits out to the Swamp and as of last fall, he named the Gators as his leader. Dan Mullen envisioned using Douglas as a Percy Harvin-like athlete in the offense, which was alluring for the four-star do-it-all prospect.

LSU and Florida jockeyed position for Douglas for much of the fall and into the spring -- that was until Douglas returned to Florida to visit Florida State for a junior day. Eventually, the Seminoles' push increased and assistant Ron Dugans made Douglas a priority. During Douglas' recent tour to Ohio State, to the Sunshine State and across the Southeast, Douglas named his trip to Tallahassee as one of his top visits.

Within weeks of his visit, Douglas gave Florida State his commitment.

"Florida State was great," Douglas told Rivals last week. "I loved it. I love Coach (Ron) Dugans and Coach (Willie) Taggart. I'll be back up there soon."

WHY IT'S BIG FOR FLORIDA STATE

Florida State has not historically recruited The Boot well, but it certainly has plucked a prospect here and there dating back to Jimbo Fisher's tenure in Tallahassee. Douglas is a big get for Willie Taggart, the staff's first Louisiana commitment to date.

Douglas is one of the most prolific slot receivers in the nation. He's listed as an athlete because he plays high school for Terrebonne (La.) High, but he's a 7-on-7 and camp superstar and one of the biggest playmakers at receiver in the country when given the opportunity.

Douglas is small in stature (5-foot-9, 184 pounds), so he's geared to play inside. He's explosive with a 4.4-second 40 time and the ability to make vertical plays downfield and create yards after the catch.

The four-star has soft hands and is a fantastic route-runner. Despite his frame, Douglas has great vertical ability and a great catch radius, which should help to make his quarterbacks look better.

The four-star has a unique ability to change direction, which makes him a threat in the return game. He also can turn small gains into big chunk-yard plays. He runs crisp routes and has great footwork and his ability to give head fakes on routes allow Douglas to sneak by downfield.

Douglas doesn't get the opportunity to play a lot of receiver at the high school level, but don't expect a long adjustment period when he arrives at Florida State. He should be able to be an instant-impact slot receiver that can also contribute in a pass-catching role in the backfield or on special teams.
