In our third Insider Report from the June Jimbo Fisher Camp, two receivers from the 2018 class make a strong impression on the FSU staff. Also, defensive back and LSU commitment Nadab Joseph makes yet another visit to FSU. Are the 'Noles a legitimate factor in his recruitment?
Two 2018 WRs put on a show in Thursday afternoon session
Rockledge, Fla., wide receiver Antoine Green and Holly Springs, N.C., receiver Bryce Wheaton were flying under the recruiting radar when they came into the Jimbo Fisher camp this week, but that won't be the case anymore. Both receivers delivered very impressive performances in the afternoon session Thursday.
Wheaton, who measured in at 6-foot-3 and 183 pounds, was clearly one of the better receivers in the position drills. For a bigger wideout, he didn't have any trouble getting in and out of his routes, and he was very smooth throughout the session.
"I think it was a great showcase for me," Wheaton said. "My route-running was probably the thing I did the best. Coach [Lawrence] Dawsey gave me some things to work on, and I worked them in today. They told me better how to spin at the top of the route."
The fact that Wheaton made the trip down from North Carolina for camp shows his interest level. The question now is whether the Seminoles will reciprocate with an offer.
"Oh, they've always been one of my favorite schools for sure," Wheaton said. "I already have some really good offers West Virginia, Missouri, Southern Miss, Virginia Tech and a few more I can't remember. But the FSU one would certainly shake things up. ...
"I've always loved how they use receivers. The big receivers like Auden Tate and myself, they don't just throw it up -- they use them in a lot of different routes all over the field. You see it every year with that offense."
Wheaton was expecting to meet with Fisher and Dawsey later Thursday and is hopeful the Seminoles will come through with an offer. If that happens, it could affect his original plan to make a commitment in August.
