Four-star guard lands first ACC offer

When it comes to versatility, guard/forward Montay Brandon of Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.) certainly fits the criteria. His rebounding, scoring, and control on the floor with his ball handling has led to two big offers with Nebraska and South Carolina. On Friday evening, Brandon added another big one, this time from the ACC.

Warchant.com spoke with the 6-foot-6, 195-pound standout to get his immediate reaction to the offer.

"Yes sir, Florida State offered me on Friday. My high school coach at Wesleyan Christian Academy Coach Gallon called me and said you need to call Florida State so I gave a call to FSU assistant coach Dennis Gates," he said. "I was excited because FSU is a top program, and I have always been impressed with them. It's my first ACC offer so that's big to me. Coach Gates told me they were ready to offer because they love everything with my versatility. We just talked about how they could use me on their team as a combo player at either forward or guard. He also said they love everything about my game."

Even with the offer, this isn't the first time Brandon has kept a close eye on the Florida State Seminoles. He kept an eye on the 'Noles during their NCAA Sweet 16 run this past season and says he likes how versatile the Seminoles are, especially on defense.

"I love how FSU plays defense because that's the area I try to take a lot of pride in myself," said Brandon. "It's very clear the coaching staff makes it clear about excelling on the defensive end so that impresses me a lot."

As a junior, the talented combo guard averaged 16.4 points and 2.4 assists per game. But he feels his biggest strength is his ability to control the game and score in a number of ways.

"I mostly play the two guard with our offense, but I do have the ball in my hands most of the time," said the Rivals150 member. "I also play some post up wing or forward for our team so I'm getting more comfortable with that, but guard is the position I feel comfortable at. I think my strengths are that I keep my teammates pretty involved in the game, I'm a vocal leader, and I simply use my height as an advantage with being able to post up the smaller guards. My ball handling skills are good - I'm able to dish or distribute the ball well. This year as a senior I want to improve on my shooting. I simply want to get more consistent in this area both from long range and scoring in a variety of ways, different type of shots like the floater, back to the basket, stuff like that."

FSU isn't the only school that has extended an offer according to the four-star guard.

"Yes sir South Carolina, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Cleveland State, Appalachian State, and Liberty are some of the ones that have offered me right now," he said.

The FSU offer was certainly good news, but Brandon's main focus this weekend is the Lebron James Skill Camp in Ohio.

"This whole camp has been really great because I'm learning so many new things that I will be using. What I like even more is competing against the top players," noted Brandon. "I've gone against LJ Rose, and JaMichael Reese were some of the guys. I love the competition but also have learned a lot."

So does Brandon plan on visiting Florida State anytime soon?

"Yes, I will be taking an official visit to FSU in September. My focus will be on getting to know the coaches, players and campus," he said. "I know how I fit into their program after speaking with Coach Gates and Coach Hamilton, so my main focus will be on getting to know the coaches and getting a feel of the campus."
