He missed all three 3-point attempts. And he missed all three of his free throws for that matter.

But even with that, Florida State freshman Scottie Barnes still showed what all the hype was about in the Seminoles' 86-58 victory Wednesday night over North Florida.

Barnes finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in 24 minutes of action.

Maybe the most impressive stat was that the 6-foot-9 point guard had just two turnovers in his college debut.

"Scottie has the potential to be really effective for us this year," FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton said. "First game, you know, is somewhat challenging for a first-year player. ... I just think he's going to grow with the more experience he has and is going to get better and better because he has a high IQ. He gives tremendous effort.

"And there are times when he can affect the game without even scoring, with his defense, his rebounding, his decision-making. So, we're very pleased with the potential we saw in him tonight."

Barnes is the highest-rated prospect to ever sign with Florida State, but he's not a typical five-star recruit. Throughout high school, he was known more for his defense and passing than he was for his scoring ability.

That was on full display on Wednesday night. Barnes was typically guarding North Florida's ball-handlers at the top of the key. His frame and his wingspan, as well as his quickness, made things mighty difficult for the Ospreys on the perimeter.

Barnes didn't record a steal, but he had a number of deflections that were near-steals.

And while he was credited with six assists, he had two more passes that led to teammates getting fouled underneath -- and a number of others to open shooters who just happened to miss their shots.

Barnes also had the highlight of the night when he took a pass in transition from Wyatt Wilkes, went behind his back with the ball to avoid a defender and then dunked it. All in one motion.

The play came at a critical moment in the game, as the Ospreys had cut Florida State's lead to 11 in the second half.

It was just a glimpse of the special talent Barnes possesses.

"That's not something you would (normally) see from a freshman in his first game," redshirt junior forward RaiQuan Gray said. "But that's the type of dude he is. ... He's an athletic guy. It's just kind of easy for him. I wasn't surprised by that honestly."

As for the junior's assessment overall of his uber-talented freshman teammate?

"I think he made a few mistakes," Gray said. "But obviously that's every freshman coming in for their first game. But he did a great job defending and communicating with his teammates and how to control the pace of the game a little bit. He's definitely going to get better as the weeks progress.

"I expect a better Scottie Barnes Wednesday against Indiana."
