Freshman quarterback De'Andre Johnson's career at Florida State is finished before it really began. Johnson, who was charged in late June with allegedly punching a female FSU student, has been dismissed from the football team, according to a statement Monday night from head coach Jimbo Fisher.
Johnson, a four-star recruit who was named Florida Mr. Football following a record-breaking career at Jacksonville's First Coast High School, enrolled at FSU in January and showed great promise during spring practice. He completed 8 of 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game.
But if Johnson is going to continue his college career, it will be somewhere other than FSU. According to FSU, his dismissal is effective immediately.
According to the probable cause affidavit released by Tallahassee Police on June 30, a female victim told police she was in line waiting to order a drink at a bar when a man later identified as Johnson began pushing her from behind. When she turned and raised her hand to defend herself, according to the report, Johnson grabbed her arm "and began pushing her."
The victim said she raised her knee toward Johnson's midsection to push him away and also tried to punch him with her left fist because he wouldn't let go of her right arm. Johnson then punched the woman in the left side of her face, police said.
A video of the incident was released by the state attorney's office on Monday.
Johnson was expected to be fourth on FSU's depth chart this fall, behind senior transfer Everett Golson, junior Sean Maguire and sophomore J.J. Cosentino. The Seminoles also will have true freshman Deondre Francois on the roster.
