CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Top-ranked Florida State (29-7, 16-2 ACC) could not complete the road sweep of Boston College (14-22, 5-13 ACC) Sunday afternoon on Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Shea Field as the Seminoles fell to the Eagles 17-6.
After scoring four runs in the first two innings, Boston College held Florida State to just one run the rest of the way snapping the Seminoles' eight-game win streak in the series. The loss was just the second for FSU in ACC play this year as both have come on the road.
The Eagles out hit the Seminoles 19-11 on Sunday afternoon as it marked the largest margin of victory for Boston College in the series. The 17 runs and 19 hits recorded by Boston College were the most given up by the Seminoles this year.
"It was just one of those games in which we made some mistakes and they capitalized on every mistake we made," said head coach Mike Martin. "Literally, BC took us to the wood shed this afternoon."
BC's bullpen kept the Seminole offense in check after Eagles starter Taylor Lasko lasted just 1.1 innings. Kyle Prohovich, Nate Bayuk and Matt Brazis combined to work the 6.2 innings allowing just one run on six hits as they walked two and struck out nine. Prohovich earned the win moving to 1-1 after working 3.2 shutout innings. Jay Jeannotte worked the ninth and allowed a run on one hit and three walks as he struck out two.
"This happened to be their day," added Martin. "We got to be strong enough to throw it away and be ready to go on Wednesday and that is what we intend to do."
Mack Waugh suffered the loss as he fell to 3-1 on the year. The senior right hander worked 2.2 innings in relief allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. Waugh came on in relief of FSU starter Peter Miller, who lasted just 0.2 innings, his shortest outing in nine starts this year.
Jayce Boyd, Josh Delph and Sherman Johnson each had two hits apiece to pace the Seminoles. Boyd drove in a pair of runs, while James Ramsey and Delph all recorded a double in the loss.
Similar to Saturday's game, the Seminoles struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning courtesy of a two-run double by Boyd to take an early 2-0 lead. Sherman Johnson led off the game with a walk and moved to third on a double to left by Ramsey. Both Seminole base runners came around to score on Boyd's double off the wall in right.
Boston College answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 3-2 lead. The Eagles would knock out FSU starter Peter Miller after facing just six batters on Sunday. Miller had trouble finding the strike zone in his ninth start of the season issuing three walks and giving up an RBI single before being lifted for Waugh.
Blake Butera drew the first walk of the inning and plated the first Eagle run on two wild pitches scoring from second on the second wild pitch from Miller. Anthony Melchionda and Rob Moir reached on consecutive walks and Marc Perdios singled to right scoring Melchionda to end the afternoon for Miller.
Waugh would give up a walk to load the bases and then an RBI infield single to Matt Pare as Moir scored from third to give BC a 3-2 advantage. The senior right hander would get out of the inning without further damage as Travis Ferrick would fly out to right for out number three.
Florida State retook the lead at 4-3 scoring twice in the top of the second. The first three Seminole batters to the plate reached as Justin Gonzalez was hit by a pitch, Delph ripped a double to the gap in right center and Johnson followed with an RBI single to left scoring Gonzalez for the first run of the inning. Delph gave the Seminoles their second lead of the afternoon scoring on an RBI groundout by Ramsey.
The Eagles tied the game at 4-4 after three when Pare registered a two-out single through the right side scoring Melchionda, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. BC would load the bases on bunt single by Ferrick, but Waugh would hold the Eagles to just one run as Gonzalez made a nice defensive play on a groundball up the middle by Matt McGovern, flipping over to Travis to get the force out at second to end the inning.
Boston College grabbed its second lead of the afternoon on a groundball off the bat of Moir. With runners at second and third following a single and double by Tom Bourdon and Melchionda, respectively, Moir brought them both home on his groundball to short as the throw from Gonzalez went wild over to first.
Luke Weaver entered the ball game following the play and recorded a double play to end the inning getting Perdios looking on strikes, while McGee threw out Moir trying to steal third.
The Seminoles threatened in the sixth putting two aboard with just one out but Nate Bayuk got out of the jam getting Johnson looking on strikes and Travis to ground back to the mound to keep BC's 6-4 lead in tact. In the inning, Gonzalez dropped a bloop single to right and pinch hitter John Nogowski was hit on the arm.
The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the inning as Bourdon connected on a two-out home run to right. The sophomore centerfielder took a 2-2 pitch from Weaver out of the park for his eighth round tripper of the season to give Boston College a 7-4 advantage.
Florida State cut the deficit to 7-5 on a two-out RBI single by Jose Brizuela in the seventh. Boyd reached on a single up the middle, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored two batters later on Brizuela's single to right center.
BC pushed its lead to 9-5 taking advantage of a Seminole error to score a pair of unearned runs. The Eagles loaded the bases against Weaver on a single, hit-by-pitch and walk as Martin went to the bullpen and brought on Bryant Holtmann. The freshman southpaw got Ferrick to ground back to the mound, but the throw from Holtmann went high over the head of Stephen McGee at the plate scoring two to give Boston College a four-run advantage.
The Seminoles left two more on in the eighth as Matt Brazis struck out the side to keep the BC lead at 9-5. After getting Gonzalez swinging on strikes, Nogowski drew a walk and Johnson reached on a bloop single to left. But Brazis came right back with strikeouts to Travis and Ramsey to close the eighth inning.
Boston College put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth sending 14 batters to the plate scoring all eight runs on two outs to extend its lead to 17-5.
FSU added one more run in the ninth when Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk off Jay Jeannotte to score Stephen Spradling from third, who led off the inning with a walk.
Florida State had its chances to score runs all afternoon as the Seminoles left 13 runners on base in the loss.
Florida State will return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 18 as the Seminoles host North Georgia College with first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
