FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher has tried to make the Carolinas a bigger part of the Seminoles' recruiting. On Sunday, the Seminoles added yet another defensive lineman from the region when 2015 defensive end Michael Barnett committed to FSU.
The one-time Virginia Tech commitment visited Florida State last summer. He made a return visit this week to participate in the Jimbo Fisher Football Camp. The 6-foot-4, 245 pound prospect couldn't wait any longer and decided to pull the trigger and commit to the 'Noles.
"I'm proud to announce that I'll be spending my next 3-4 years at Florida State University," he posted on Twitter.
This spring, he told TigerIllustrated.com (Rivals' Clemson site) he didn't want to stay in-state and it was his last option.
The job defensive ends coach Sal Sunseri did with FSU's defensive line, including an breakout seasons from Mario Edwards Jr. and Chris Casher caught Barnett's attention. But it was also the relationship he developed with main recruiter Jay Graham that sold him on FSU.
"I relly like the coaches and how they're like a family off the field," he told Warchant.com. "But on the field, it's about business and becoming the best you can possibly become."
Barnett picked FSU over Georgia, N.C. State and Clemson. He is the No. 20-ranked strong side defensive end in the country and the No. 6 player in South Carolina. As a junior he had 89 tackles, 31 tackles for loss and seven sacks.
Fisher's focus on pulling players out of North and South Carolina appears to be paying off, particularly on the defensive line. The Seminoles signed three-star defensive end Lorezo Featherson Jr. from Greensboro, N.C. and three-star defensive tackle Arthur Williams from Fayetteville, N.C. in February as part of the 2014 class.
