ORLANDO, Fla. - Florida State is quite successful with targets Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. Bobby Hart, Rashad Greene and Lamarcus Joyner are the current 'Noles who played for the powerhouse program. The Seminoles want to keep that momentum going with junior 6-foot-2, 180 pound standout Corey Holmes, who already holds an early offer from the Seminoles. Warchant spoke with Holmes after his Raider team captured the 7A State title knocking off Tallahassee Lincoln.
The Raiders last won a state championship in 2010. The results were the same in 2012 as they possessed a strong aerial assault led by Holmes, who finished with four catches for 163 yards and one touchdown.
"On the film we saw on them, we definitely thought we could attack their safeties because of how close they were playing up," Holmes said. "We knew we was going to be successful going deep."
How big is this to win a state championship as a junior?
"It's huge," he said. In my freshman year I was actually on the 2010 team and I played a on special teams a little bit, but didn't really get to play the receiver spot as much. This is great though."
The main recruiter at St. Thomas Aquinas was Eddie Gran. But the former FSU assistant coach's departure - he left to take the offensive coordinator job at Cincinnati - hasn't affected Holmes' high interest in the 'Noles.
"The recruiter who recruits my school just left, he took the offensive coordinator spot, but prior to him leaving, I was talking to him very often. I'm still in contact with FSU," Holmes said.
What does Holmes like about FSU's offense?
"The way they use their receivers is great. I really like the way they use their receivers," Holmes said.
Holmes has offers from Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Rutgers, South Florida, Central Florida and Syracuse. No team stands out right now, but he plans on visiting Florida State. He's also keeping an eye on how the coaching staff is worked out.
"The new recruiter that comes down here, that would be great to meet him," he said.
Holmes wears the No. 1 jersey had a lot to live up to in the game as the last time that jersey was worn was when former Aquinas standout Rashad Greene blitzed Plant for a 149-yard showing and two touchdowns. Holmes wanted to keep the tradition going.
"I was talking to my teammates before the game, and I told them that the last time this jersey was worn was the state championship, Rashard had 100 yards, so that was my goal for this game," said Holmes.
