Rivals250 prospect and four-star WR Devin Carter committed to Florida State during his freshman year. That commitment lasted eight months before Carter decided to open things back up and fully explore all options as his recruitment continued to blow up.
That search led him to commit to Auburn in January, as he committed to the Tigers a year later.
With a new offensive coaching staff, the Seminoles are pushing hard to get back into the mix in Carter's recruitment and flip him back to the program that his father, Dexter, played for in the late 1980's.
Carter visited campus for the first time in just under a year on Thursday to feel out the vibe of the new coaching staff and take in the Seminoles’ fifth practice of the spring.
"I wanted to get back," Carter said on his visit. "They got Coach Malzahn and Coach Harris as new offensive coaches. So I figured I'd come and get to meet them, get the vibe of them and get the feel the new offense. I thought it was a need to get back to a school like Florida State."
Carter was familiar with both coaches already. Malzahn offered his older brother (Dexter Jr.) when he was a recruit, but that was when Devin was in elementary school. Carter had known wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. from when he was at UCF. Harris and Devin's father coached high school football together.
Between Malzahn, Harris and Norvell they have been pushing relentlessly to get Carter back on campus for another look.
"They've been calling me every week - almost every day trying to get me back (on campus). Coach Malzahn, Coach Norvell and Coach Harris. There was a need to get back to show the appreciation and get to feel the new feel around here," Carter said.
Having seen practice on Thursday, Carter is looking forward to seeing a more explosive offense from the Seminoles. An offense spearheaded by Norvell and Malzahn.
"He (Malzahn) won a national championship, then he brought his offense to UCF and had a top 15 offense for three straight years - so that's convincing. When I saw they brought him to Florida State, him and Norvell together is going to be crazy. I'm excited to see how it goes," Carter said.
But the real reason why the Seminoles are still remotely in it is because of Mike Norvell.
"You can tell that he cares for his guys and I like that a lot. He's going to keep me around just by doing that," Carter said. "He's always been in it just because how much he cares for me personally. Besides the legacy stuff, besides my dad, he tells me how much I mean to this university and what I can do for this university. I could make plays and I'm a player he wants to coach. I'm glad he makes that known. I'm here for it."
As of right now, Carter only has an official visit scheduled to Auburn for June 13. But following his visit Thursday and with how hard the Seminoles are showing interest, Carter is planning on taking an official visit to Florida State and possibly Ole Miss.
Carter is still working out dates, but his official visit to Florida State will most likely take place on June 6.
Beyond that, Carter wants to return to Tallahassee for the season opener against Alabama.
While Carter says he is still locked in with Auburn, the Seminoles’ new offensive coaching staff, and more presently Mike Norvell, are giving him something to think about as the Seminoles try to earn back his commitment.
