The good news continues to flow in for Florida State as Clinton (Miss.) five-star running back Cam Akers announced on Tuesday night that he has committed to the Seminoles over Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU and others.
Akers becomes the 17th commitment for the 'Noles and the second consecutive five-star prospect to join the 2017 class. Just last week, five-star defensive end Josh Kaindoh committed to FSU.
In this Impact Analysis, we break down exactly what Akers' commitment means for the Seminoles.
"He's a huge pick-up for FSU," Rivals national recruiting analyst Rob Cassidy said. "What we wanted to see with Cam at different events in the summer was how he does against elite competition, and he showed that in being a match-up problem for linebackers."
Akers' commitment is significant for a number of reasons, Cassidy said. Not only could Akers help fill the void left by Dalvin Cook's departure should Cook leave early for the NFL, but he also gives FSU even more momentum on the recruiting trail.
Before Akers made his announcement, many wondered whether FSU could land an elite recruit from an area that traditionally is a Southeastern Conference stronghold. That is no longer a question.
"Adding Cam helps FSU a lot there in the Southeast because that's an area Alabama does well," Cassidy said. "That could help them a lot for the 2018 and 2019 future classes."
With two five-star commitments in less than a week, FSU is one of the hottest programs in the country right now, if not the hottest. And the Seminoles also are in pursuit of the nation's No. 2 overall prospect, DT Marvin Wilson, who confirmed Tuesday that FSU is one of his five finalists. Wilson plans to make his decision on National Signing Day.
