No. 2 Louisville Baseball scored a pair of runs in the first inning, two more in the second and another in the third to beat arch-rival Kentucky 5-3 Tuesday night in front of a record crowd of 6,204 fans at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville coach Dan McDonnell tabbed Shane Hummel for the start and the senior righty pitched well until he was replaced in the third inning by Adam Elliott. The Cardinals ended up using six different pitchers to hold the shutout until the ninth inning.
The Cardinals kept the Wildcats scoreless for the first eight innings, scattering seven hits before things got tense in the top of the ninth Louisville's Rabon Martin let UK have runners on first and third with one out. A walk loaded the bases, and McDonnell brought in closer Lincoln Henzman for the final two outs.
First Tristan Pompey hit an RBI single to score one run and then Zach Reks hit a line drive just over the glove of Louisville first baseman Brendan McKay to score two more, cutting Louisville's lead to 5-3. Louisville got out of the jam when Catcher Colby Fitch threw out Reks at second to end the game.
