The Seminoles held a light 20-period in shorts Monday afternoon after reviewing the film for Saturday's full scrimmage. Cornerback Korey Mangum stood out for the defense with three pass break-ups in 7-on-7 pass skeleton including one on a deep ball to Greg Carr. Robert Hallback scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Keane and Richard Goodman made a leaping catch in traffic for a 25-yard gain to lead the offense in 7-on-7.
The last two periods of practice were used for 11-on-11 with Michael Ray Garvin and Emmanuel Dunbar recording pass break-ups. FSU has five more regular practice days remaining, plus the spring game on April 8 at 2:00 p.m. in Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles will return to practice Wednesday afternoon.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH Bobby Bowden
(on what he drew from the film of Saturday's first full scrimmage)
"We're making progress, that's the big thing, but we still have a long way to go. I saw that our defense put a much better pass rush on them. You can tell a difference when your quarterback goes out there and completes nearly all of his passes in the first two scrimmages with no pressure, then all of the sudden they're all over him, you see the importance of pass protection."
(on the development of the offensive line)
"They have put in some new things, but we've got to get better at it. We've just got to get better at technique, but that's why you practice, to get better."
(on linebacker Lawrence Timmons filling the void left by the departure of Ernie Sims)
"He really has stepped in. I think he's been the outstanding linebacker so far in this first half of spring training, but some of the other kids are doing pretty well too."
(on Drew Weatherford's ability to avoid turnovers so far in spring practice)
"He's done a pretty good job at that. I'm anxious to see how he throws next scrimmage with heat, because we get more of it now, which is good."
QUOTES FROM QUARTERBACK Drew Weatherford
(on how he will look to perform under a heavier pass rush in the next scrimmage)
"You always want to be a quarterback that can perform under pressure, throw the ball when you're being hit and I feel like I'm that type of player so I'm looking forward to the challenge."
(on the balance between playing aggressively and not risking turnovers)
"I feel like the turnovers come from (a lack of) experience, to be honest. I'm going to play aggressive, but at the same time not greedy. Coach Dickey always tells us, `be needy, but not greedy' and I feel like sometimes last year I got greedy and tried to do too many things on the field. I feel like now I've gotten better and more mature and I won't do that this year."
