For the first time in his eight-year tenure, Jimbo Fisher is 0-2 to start a season after Florida State's 27-21 loss to North Carolina State on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium.
N.C. State held a 10-0 lead through the first quarter until Seminoles quarterback James Blackman found junior receiver Auden Tate for a four-yard touchdown pass. FSU trimmed the lead to 10-7 after Ricky Aguayo converted the extra point with 12:24 left in the second quarter.
Blackman, who made his first career start, finished 22 of 38 for 278 yards and a touchdown.
The Wolfpack responded when Ryan Finley connected on a 71-yard touchdown pass to Jakobi Meyers for a 17-7 edge with 1:34 remaining in the first half. FSU ended the half with Aguayo tacking on a 37-yard field goal and a 17-10 deficit.
Aguayo opened the third quarter with his second field goal. His 36-yarder brought FSU closer but N.C. State still led 17-13 with 11:33 left. The four-point lead was short-lived with N.C. State kicker Carson Wise drilling a 30-yarder to push his team's lead to 20-13 with 6:06 left.
FSU went to Aguayo again in the fourth. He hit a 37-yard attempt but N.C. State countered when Finley threw a 14-yard shovel pass to Jaylen Samuels for a 27-16 lead with 9:16 remaining.
The Seminoles would grab two points off a safety while Aguayo hit another 34-yarder to cut the lead to 27-21 with 3:01 left.
