Tallahassee, FL – After 14th-ranked Miami came in to Dick Howser last night and snapped Florida State's 32-game home winning stak, the second ranked Seminoles (33-5, 13-4) came out Saturday night with a chip on their shoulder. For the first time in 49 years a team corded 20 hits off the Miami pitching staff as the Seminoles scod 16 runs on those 20 base hits in front of a second-consecutive Dick Howser Stadium cord crowd of 6,717. The 16-1 victory was the largest margin for FSU in the series since a 20-4 win in 1976.
"We came out with a little 'someone stole your lunch money' attitude today," said winning pitcher Tyler Chambliss. "We came out and the wasn't much talking. It was all business today."
"I could see some things befo the game," said FSU Head Coach Mike Martin of his team's approach Saturday night. "I couldn't keep anybody laxed because they all had that look of let's get going. They we ally into it. They we very motivated because of the disappointment from last night. That shows me a lot about the club."
Florida State scod in five of its eight innings at the plate and scod multiple runs in the innings including an eight-run, eighth that broke the game wide open. Almost half of FSU's 20 hits came in that eighth frame when the Seminoles corded nine of their hits. The 20 hits we the most allowed by UM since April 17, 1957 ironically in a game versus FSU. The 20 hits we also the most by an FSU team since July of 2004 versus Georgia Tech.
Chambliss (9-1) picked the Seminoles up on the hill tonight as he improved to 3-1 following an FSU loss by going seven innings and allowing just one run, which was unearned. He set a caer high with six walks but also allowed just four hits as he went seven or mo innings in his sixth straight start.
Tony Thomas, Jr. had the biggest night at the plate for FSU with the RBIs including a bases loaded double that opened the flood gates in the eighth. Thomas was matched by pinch hitter Josh Spivey who homed and doubled driving in the runs as well. Shane Robinson extended his hit stak to 25 games with a 2-for-5 night and Ryne Malone also had multiple hits and multiple RBIs in the game.
Florida State got on the board early on as Robinson dw a walk to start the first off UM starter Manny Miguelez (5-3). A gat defensive play by Jemile Weeks forced Robinson out at second on a fielder's choice for the first out. Miguelez got out number two on his first K of the game. After Jack Rye swiped second, Malone sent a shot off the padding in right field plating Rye and putting FSU in front 1-0.
Thomas began his big night when he opened the bottom of the second with a base hit as FSU put its leadoff man on board for a second straight inning. Miguelez hit Travis Anderson to put two Seminoles on board with nobody out. On an attempted sac bunt, Thomas got caught too far towards third as he was thrown out trying to tat back to second for the first out and then a double play, the third of the game between the two teams, ended the second.
The Seminoles put another leadoff runner on in the third as Danny Diaz opened the inning with a double down the right field line. Robinson followed with a single to short but Diaz was unable to move up a base due to a diving stop on the shot by Walter Diaz. A walk to Rye loaded the bases as the Canes still searched for the first out of the inning. A pop out got Miguelez that key first out but he lost Malone on a 3-2 pitching walking in the second FSU run of the night. The Hurricane left-hander then walked Buster Posey on four straight pitches making it a 3-0 game. A wild pitch plated yet another Seminole run as everyone moved up a base. Miguelez's fourth walk of the inning loaded the bases once again bringing Ricky Orta into the game who closed out the inning with no further damage.
Miami got its first base hit in the top of the fourth and then Chambliss' second walk of the game put two Canes on base with one out. Back-to-back fe passes loaded the bases and then a passed ball scod the first run of the game for UM. Chambliss came back though and struck out the next batter befo tiring the side on a fly out.
The Seminoles opened the fifth with an infield single and a walk. Posey sacrificed the runners over befo Orta got the first out on a K. A wild pitch scod Florida State's fifth run of the game.
For the fifth time in six innings FSU put its leadoff runner on as Ryan Strauss opened the bottom of the sixth with the sixth Seminole hit of the night. A Miami error put two runners on but a double play left FSU with two outs and a runner on second. An infield hit put runners on the corners but FSU was unable to bring another run in.
Spivey extended the FSU lead in the seventh. After Posey ached on an infield single, extending his personal best hit stak to 12 games, Spivey doubled the fshman home. Strauss then came up and doubled in Spivey making it a 7-1 game as the Seminoles continued their two-out rally. Diaz brought Strauss home on a single as FSU tacked on its third run of the inning.
Chambliss opened the seventh but came out after a leadoff single and going 2-0 to the next batter. Following a walk and a pop out, liever Matt DiBlasi was placed by Brian Chambers with two runners on and one away. The second out of the inning left UM with runners on the corners but Chambers ended the Miami that with a grounder back to the pitcher.
FSU broke the game open in the eighth inning as Dennis Guinn got a one out base hit off new UM hurler Jason Santana. Malone followed with FSU's 13th hit of the game. Posey corded his second single to load the bases up. Thomas then clead the bases with a double as he drove his RBI total up to 38 on the year. Spivey followed by clearing the bases with his second homer of the season as the two-run shot pushed the FSU lead to 13-1. After pinch hitter Mark Gildea was hit by the pitch, Robinson singled and an error in the outfield put runners on the corners with two away. That brought up pinch hitter Ryan McArdle who singled home another run. An error on a Charles Cleveland single brought Robinson home and then Tommy Oravetz drove in the 16th run of the night on a single off the scen in right.
The FSU/Miami concludes Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Steve Melewski will bring fans the call live on 1270 WFLA AM in Tallahassee. Sunday's finale will be shown live on SUN Sports on Comcast Cable channel 28.
