The tide of Florida State coaches leaving to take positions at other schools came to an end on Friday. Head coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed that quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Dameyune Craig will be staying on at Florida State despite an offer from new Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn to join the Tigers' staff.
"He's a very good recruiter and a very good coach, all of that," Fisher said. "It's huge. He and I have had a relationship for a long time.
"He understands what we are doing here and how good a team we can have. He wants to be successful. It (Auburn) was not the right situation. The others (assistants taking other jobs) were all promotions."
Details of the offer are unknown but it has been speculated that Craig would have received a raise somewhere in the $100,000 range to become a position coach at Auburn. His current salary at FSU is $205,000 following a 12,500 annual raise issued earlier this year.
Craig has a reputation as an ace recruiter. This past February, after helping to sign three of the top six players in Alabama, he was named's ACC recruiter of the year.
Earlier this week running backs coach and special teams' coordinator Eddie Gran accepted a job at Cincinnati to become the Bearcats' offensive coordinator. Two week earlier FSU lost defensive coordinator Mark Stoops to Kentucky after he took the head coaching position there. Shortly thereafter D.J. Eliot, who served as FSU's defensive ends coach, followed Stoops to Kentucky to become the Wildcats' defensive coordinator.
Offensive coordinator James Coley's name has also been associated with other coaching vacancies but for the time being he appears to be staying put at Florida State.
Florida State held its first practice on Friday since the Dec. 1 ACC Championship game. The Seminoles will close out the season on Jan. 1 in the Discover Orange Bowl against Northern Illinois.
