Position change for FSU commitment

Ed Christian continues to be one of the gems of Florida State's 2010 recruiting class. No one is working the phones more, and no one is trying to lure in more recruits to FSU than the Lowndes County (GA) offensive tackle. Or should we say offensive guard? Evidentially, the 'Noles may have a new plan for the four-star big man.

The 6-foot-5, 287-pound lineman recently took part in the Seminole Showtime Camp. And while he was working with the tackles, FSU decided to try him at guard and liked what they saw.

"He (Rick Trickett) said he's looking at me at guard during 1-on-1's," Christian said. "I got so good at guard, I couldn't be beat. I don't know where I'm going to play at, as long as I play, that's fine."

So it appears that Christian just became more valuable. Not only because he is helping FSU to recruit, but because he is versatile enough to play two positions along the offensive line. And he has Trickett and former 'Nole Tra Thomas to thank.

"I talked to Tra Thomas, he was giving me pointers," Christian said. "He said I was real good. They were coaching us for 20 or 30 minutes and it transferred real well."

So what did the talented big man think about a potential position change?

"Guard, it's more about leverage than everything," he said. "You got a good chance if you move your feet. You'll be able to stay stable and stay square."

On the recruiting front, his number one target has been Lowndes teammate Telvin Smith. And he came through when the three-star linebacker committed to the 'Noles last Friday.

With Smith now on board, that means four Lowndes County Vikings should be on the 'Noles roster by 2010, with Smith and Christian joining current FSU freshmen Greg Reid and Gerald Demps.

But Christian is also working two other South Georgia big men. One could be Lawrence Virgil, a 6-foot-5, 273 pound offensive tackle from Brooks County, Georgia. The other is an offensive tackle from Coffee County.

The four-star lineman says he's still 100 percent firm in his commitment to the Garnet and Gold but he does plan to take all five of his official visits. Those visits will most likely be to South Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Southern California, and Florida State. But his next visit will likely be to Tallahassee for the September 7th Miami game.

Christian also had a lot to say about the loss of Aubrey Phillips. The 2009 signee recently left the team, leaving a hole in the offensive line. But Christian says if you don't want to play for the 'Noles, then you shouldn't be here anyway.

"The way I see it, if he can't take it, so be it," Christian said. "It's going to open up more opportunities for me to play. I don't just want to jump in and play, I want to learn and have no mistakes. I want to be the perfect player. I want perfection."

Christian says he's currently weighing in at about 287 pounds. That's about 7-8 pounds heavier than he plans to be once he reports next summer.

"When I was there I weighed in at 286-287. He (Trickett) said the way I'm looking, I'm pretty good," he said. "But I'll come in about five pounds under where he wants me at. He said 285, so I'll try to come in at 280."
