QB Jake Garcia's father explains decommitment, talks Miami, FSU, more

Four-star quarterback Jake Garcia, the nation's No. 5 pro-style signal-caller, was committed to Southern Cal for more than a year. But that all changed on Thursday night when Garcia decommitted from the Trojans.

CaneSport.com spoke with Garcia’s father, Randy, for an inside look at how it all went down. And he said USC’s pursuit of Utah QB Jaxson Dart was -- as Randy puts it ---“the lone straw that broke the camel’s back.”

The Trojan coaches previously discussed a second QB coming into the class with the Garcia family, and that happened with the addition of Miller Moss June 1 (Garcia, a California native, committed back in September of 2019). The father said Jake and the family were fine with that, as competition is something Garcia embraces.

But with USC continuing to push hard for Dart and the Trojans making his "top five" a week ago, Garcia decided to seek a new future.

“USC is not in it at all anymore,” Randy said. “Now they’re offering another ‘21 kid and it has nothing to do with Jaxson, it could have been John Doe. Jake was never told anything about it until the morning of the announcement (that USC was after Dart). It was only that. USC was close to home, we all liked it, it would have been a perfect deal for him.”

So who is in it now?

That’s the big question.

For sure Miami and Florida State are high up in Garcia’s thinking. Cane coordinator Rhett Lashlee has formed a strong bond with the QB, and Garcia was FaceTiming UM recruits almost as soon as he tweeted out his USC decommitment. The relationship is there.

But there's also a solid bond at FSU, where Garcia has a connection with coordinator/QB coach Kenny Dillingham.

“He recruited Jake when he was at Auburn, offered him there,” the father said.
