WR Recruiting Breakdown: Who's coming, going for FSU?
With the 2016 college football season winding down, it's time to look closer at Florida State's 2017 recruiting class. The Seminoles currently have 14 commitments in the fold, and with a small senior class graduating, they are expecting to sign between 21-25 this February.
Over the next few weeks, we will take a position-by-position look at the Seminoles' recruiting efforts through four key areas: Who they're losing; who's coming back; who they've landed; and who they're targeting. This installment is on the wide receivers.
Previous editions: Quarterbacks | Running backs |
Who they're losing
The Seminoles will lose a pair of seniors to graduation -- Kermit Whitfield and Jesus "Bobo" Wilson -- as well as junior reserve Ja'Vonn Harrison, who was suspended during the season and intends to transfer. Whitfield finished the regular season as the Seminoles' second-leading receiver with 33 catches, and Wilson had 30 receptions through seven games before going down with a season-ending foot injury.
Who's coming back
The Seminoles not only are expected to have leading receiver Travis Rudolph back for his senior year, but promising young wideouts Auden Tate and Nyqwan Murray will be back as well. After coming on in the middle of their sophomore seasons, Tate and Murray each recorded 25 receptions and they combined for nine touchdowns. FSU also brings back rising junior Da'Vante Phillips and talented prospects George Campbell and Keith Gavin.
FSU originally was looking to sign one or two receivers in this class, but that could bump up to two or three because of Harrison's expected departure. The 'Noles likely will be looking for three or four in 2018.
Who they've landed
The Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian standout reminds some of former FSU great Peter Warrick because of his ability to stop on a dime and change directions at near full-speed. Seminole fans got a little nervous this fall when he took an official visit to Tennessee, but we are told there is nothing to worry about with Matthews. He is expected to sign as an early enrollee with the 'Noles. In fact, we believe he's already filled out his paperwork to make that happen.
