Florida State sophomore safety Derwin James will undergo surgery to take care of minor cartilage damage to his knee, head coach Jimbo Fisher announced during his regular Monday afternoon press conference.

Fisher emphasized that the MRI confirmed there was no structural damage to the knee. Nevertheless, FSU's star safety will not play in this week's top-10 showdown at Louisville.

Fisher speculated that he could return anywhere from two to six weeks depending on how quickly he recovers from surgery.

James was injured Saturday during the third quarter of the Seminoles' 52-8 victory over Charleston Southern. On a busted coverage by FSU's secondary, which led to a 29-yard completion, James ran down Buccaneers tight end Qua-Vonn Scott near the far sideline and delivered a big hit to knock him out of bounds.

After taking a few steps, James went down to the turf and grabbed his left knee. He later walked off the field without assistance, then after being checked by trainers was carted to the Seminoles' locker room.

James, who earned Freshman All-America honors after recording 91 tackles in 2015, was projected to be one of the top defensive players in the nation this season. He recorded his first career interception in the season opener against Ole Miss.

FSU (2-0) has a huge test this coming Saturday at Louisville. The Cardinals are 2-0 and have dismantled their first two opponents (Syracuse and Charlotte) by a combined margin of 132-42.
