It wasn’t exactly the way Sean Maguire envisioned his Senior Day playing out.
It was sweet, nonetheless.
Maguire, who lost Florida State’s starting quarterback job to redshirt freshman Deondre Francois during the preseason, took control of the Seminoles’ offense when Francois sustained a bruised shoulder in the third quarter Friday night, and he picked up right where Francois left off.
Despite attempting only two passes all season, Maguire connected on 5 of 7 attempts for 53 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-7 rout of visiting Boston College.
“It was great. Especially with it being Senior Day,” Maguire said. “You never know when your number’s called, and it was just kind of ironic how it was Senior Night.”
Florida State already held a 28-0 lead when Maguire entered the game, and head coach Jimbo Fisher showed no reluctance about letting Maguire air it out.
After his initial screen pass was dropped for a loss, Maguire connected on two consecutive passes to sophomore wide receiver Auden Tate -- a 28-yarder and a 6-yard touchdown strike -- to put the Seminoles ahead 35-0 just before the end of the third quarter.
It was a special moment for Maguire, and it had to be for his parents as well. Kevin and Tina Maguire made the trip down from New Jersey to greet him on the field during the Seminoles’ Senior Day ceremony.
“His parents ought to be the proudest parents in the world,” Fisher said. “That guy right there is salt of the earth. Whatever you ask him to do … ‘Yes sir, I’ll do it.’ And he goes in and performs every time he goes in with a lot of heart and a lot of toughness. Just very proud and happy for him.”
