GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida State has knocked off rival Florida on its way to national championships. It has knocked the Gators out of championship hunts as well.
The Seminoles have won in blowouts and nail-biters, and everything in between. What FSU accomplished on Saturday, however, was unprecedented.
For the first time in school history, Florida State recorded its fifth consecutive victory against the Gators. Every senior on the Seminoles’ roster, including fifth-year seniors, will leave Tallahassee without ever knowing what it’s like to lose to UF.
“It’s a blessing to be a part of history,” said junior running back Jacques Patrick, who rushed for 67 yards on 15 carries during FSU’s 38-22 victory. “Five straight – that’s never been done.”
“I’m 4-0,” said senior linebacker Jacob Pugh, who got the momentum going for FSU early in the first quarter with a 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown. “I never lost to ‘em. It’s a personal thing. We were determined not to lose.”
Both teams entered Saturday’s game with identical 4-6 records, but the Seminoles had a little added motivation given its quest to attain bowl eligibility for the 36th consecutive season. FSU also is gunning to finish with a winning record for the 41st straight year.
