Box Score: FSU 27, Syracuse 24

Powered by an impressive performance by freshman tailback Cam Akers and some timely plays from the Florida State defense, the Seminoles knocked off visiting Syracuse on Saturday, 27-24, to record their first home win of the season.

FSU improves to 3-5 on the season (3-4 in ACC play) and 1-3 at Doak Campbell Stadium. Syracuse falls to 4-5 (2-3 ACC).

Despite trailing the entire game, Syracuse made things interesting with a long touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. The Orange marched 75 yards on 14 plays and capped it off with a 3-yard run by quarterback Eric Dungey.

Syracuse then got the ball back and drove to the FSU 25 before stalling. Junior safety Derwin James deflected the Orange's third-down pass, and the Orange's final field goal attempt was off the mark.

Akers, making his second start in place of injured junior Jacques Patrick, was a one-man wrecking crew in the first half. He broke off a career-best 54-yard touchdown run to give FSU an early 14-0 lead. Then he busted loose for a new career-high 63-yard touchdown run to make it 21-7.

Akers finished the first half with 159 yards on eight carries. For the game, he had 22 attempts for 199 yards.

FSU got on the board first with a 51-yard touchdown pass from James Blackman to Nyqwan Murray. The Seminoles scored 21 points in the first half; that was their highest halftime total of the season.

Syracuse cut the Seminoles' lead to four points, 21-17, early in the third quarter with a 42-yard field goal. But FSU sophomore Ricky Aguayo answered with a 49-yarder to make it 24-17. He then tacked on a 38-yarder to give the Seminoles a 10-point advantage midway through the fourth quarter.
