Sleeper OL is commitment No. 6

It's been one surprise after another the last couple weeks when it comes to Florida State recruiting. First, there was the commitment of 6-foot-5 wide receiver Cameron Wade. A few days later, after an outstanding performance at FSU's Football Camp, South Sumter linebacker Kendall Smith jumped on a scholarship offer. Then the big shocker was defensive lineman Torrey Davis, the Rivals.com No. 1 rated player in Florida, who gave a soft commitment just a few days ago.

On Saturday, sleeper offensive linemen Will Furlong from Deland, Florida decided he wanted to be a Seminole.

"I just felt that Florida State was the place for me," Furlong told Warchant.com. "I went up there (last week), that was my first time up there and I just felt the place was great, there was a great atmosphere and I really liked the coaches.

"It's FSU, it's a top notch program, I really like the coaches, and it's close enough to home where I won't have to get on a plane. It's just a perfect fit."

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound lineman is being recruited as both a tackle and guard but played primarily at the tackle position last season for Deland where he earned third team all-state honors.

"Will is a kid with a big frame that has real good feet for a kid his size," former Deland coach Dean Fabrizio said. "He's going to develop into a great football player."

Prior to the recent scholarship offer from Florida State, Furlong had already secured offers from West Virginia, Ole Miss and UCF. He was also being heavily recruited by Florida, especially earlier in the recruiting process. Because of the interest being shown by the Gators, he decided to attend the recently completed Friday Night Lights Camp in Gainesville. That experience is what convinced him that FSU was a much better fit.

"It was an interesting experience," Furlong said of UF's Friday Night Lights Camp. "It was the first time I had really been around the (Florida) coaches, and I didn't really enjoy their method of coaching. I didn't feel like it suited me. I'm kind of a laid back guy and they were real intense, I guess that's the word.

"They were recruiting me pretty heavily until I had a little back injury in the spring then they stopped a little bit. That kind of showed me something there. Florida State just kept right on and they still wanted me. They were pretty serious but I didn't feel they were a good fit for me."

Furlong says he is fully recovered from a minor back injury and will be 100 percent this season. He is on track to qualify.

The Deland standout says he is firm in his commitment and will not take any other official visits.
