Greater Atlanta Christian -- DB Kyler McMichael
Greater Atlanta Christian is certainly known for producing top prospects as of late. Last year it was QB David Mills, who eventually signed with Stanford. This year is no different as the Spartans have one of the more talented defensive backs in the country in Kyler McMichael, who has seen his recruitment really take off this spring.
McMichael currently is going through his offseason workouts, which Warchant was on hand to see earlier this week.
"Right now is about working on agility, sled drills, getting bigger, faster and stronger," McMichael said. "We also lift on the off-days, so I'm way ahead of things to be ready for college."
McMichael also is spending time visiting colleges. Some of his recent visits were to Clemson, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia and FSU a few weeks ago. In addition to doing all the offseason and spring workouts, he also plans to play some 7-on-7 this year.
"It's really about working on my cover skills with that," he said.
A few weeks later, the four-star athlete was still raving about his trip to Tallahassee for the weekend of the spring game.
"It blew me away," he said. "I've always wanted to get over to FSU because it's always been one of my favorite schools growing up. Great football program, team and the coaches are tremendous. They say they like me a lot at the safety position and see me in a very similar role to Derwin James. Which I loved that."
The highlights of that trip for McMichael were the opportunities to see FSU's defensive backs in action and also to enjoy a detailed conversation with FSU defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.
"Oh, I love their defensive secondary," McMichael said. "They run a lot of man, and they are bringing in a lot of big defensive backs, which I am. They also have six or seven defensive backs on the field. That's something I look at a lot. Jimbo Fisher told me in the meeting that he wants me bad in their defense, and the feeling is mutual about how much I like them. I'm very high on FSU."
So, where does Florida State rank on his list of favorites?
"FSU is definitely without question in my top five," McMichael said. "Loved what they had to say and how I felt when I was there. I was able to sit in the meetings with Coach Kelly. Great guy. We talk very regularly. He's genuine about anything he wants. Very personable. If I had a top five, it would be Florida State, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and I like Clemson some too."
